The 2026 Toyota Aqua GR Sport introduces a more aggressive design and handling upgrades while maintaining its efficient hybrid powertrain.

2026 Toyota Aqua GR Sport: Styling and Performance Updates Revealed

The Toyota Aqua, a Japan-exclusive subcompact hatchback, has received a mid-cycle update for 2026, introducing a new GR Sport trim that combines aggressive styling with handling enhancements. This updated model, part of the Gazoo Racing lineup, is priced at ¥3,238,400 ($20,000) and offers a more dynamic driving experience without compromising the Aqua’s hybrid efficiency.

The Aqua, closely related to the Yaris but larger, features a design inspired by the latest Prius. Initially introduced to the American market as the Prius C, the second-generation Aqua has never been sold outside Japan. The 2026 update includes a range of styling and chassis improvements, making the GR Sport trim a standout option.

The GR Sport’s Aggressive Design

The 2026 Aqua GR Sport stands out with a redesigned bodykit that gives it a lower, more aggressive stance. The front features new bumper intakes and aerodynamic extensions, while the sides are adorned with black side skirts and 17-inch alloy wheels. These wheels are fitted with red calipers that proudly display the GR logo.

At the rear, the GR Sport retains a similar design to the pre-facelift model, with decorative honeycomb inlets around the diffuser. The facelift adds a black garnish between the taillights, enhancing the Despite the GR badge and the electrified internal combustion engine (ICE) under the hood, the exhaust pipe remains hidden, maintaining a clean look.

The color palette for the GR Sport is limited to white, gray, black, and red. For those looking to further customize their Aqua, the optional GR Parts offer additional features such as fender fins to reduce turbulence, window visors, branded discharge tape, carbon license plate holders, and door stabilizers. These options provide an alternative to the Modellista upgrades, allowing owners to personalize their vehicles to their liking.

Interior Enhancements and Handling Upgrades

Inside, the GR Sport trim features new seats with heavier bolsters, upholstered in synthetic leather and Airnubuck. The interior also includes gunmetal accents, GR logos on the steering wheel and smart key, and a set of aluminum pedals. For those who want to extend the GR branding to the floor mats and luggage mat, the GR Parts catalog offers these options as well.

Handling upgrades are a key feature of the GR Sport. Extra underfloor bracing improves rigidity, while the revised suspension and retuned steering enhance the driving experience. However, the powertrain remains unchanged, featuring a 114hp 1.5-liter self-charging hybrid setup. It’s important to note that while the Aqua is available in all-wheel-drive (E-Four) form, the GR Sport is only offered with front-wheel drive.

Updates to the Standard Aqua Lineup

Alongside the GR Sport’s introduction, Toyota has rolled out updates for the standard Aqua lineup. Every E-Four variant now comes with a heated steering wheel as standard, upgraded fabric seats, and a rear center armrest with two cupholders. These enhancements aim to improve comfort and convenience for all Aqua owners.

Pricing for the 2026 Aqua in Japan starts at ¥2,857,800 ($17,600) and goes up to ¥3,072,300 ($18,900) for the standard models. The flagship GR Sport trim is priced at ¥3,238,400 ($20,000), offering a compelling package for those seeking a more dynamic and stylish hybrid hatchback.
