Android Auto Update Fixes Freezing and Disconnection Problems

Google has released an update for Android Auto to fix persistent connection issues, but users may need to visit their dealerships for a complete solution

Android Auto Update Fixes Freezing and Disconnection Problems

Google has rolled out a new update for Android Auto aiming to resolve the persistent connection issues that have been frustrating users. However, the solution might not be as straightforward as a simple software update. This latest patch requires users to visit their car dealerships, which could be inconvenient for many.

The problems began in mid-2026 when users started reporting issues with Android Auto in their Skoda cars. The glitch quickly spread to other models within the Volkswagen Group including Audi and Volkswagen vehicles. Users experienced difficulties connecting Android Auto, frequent disconnections, and malfunctioning essential features like phone calls and messaging.

Google and Volkswagen Collaborate on a Fix

A Google Community Specialist confirmed that the root cause of these issues lies within the car’s head unit. Google has collaborated with Volkswagen’s engineers to develop a fix, which is now available through authorized dealerships. Users are advised to contact their nearest dealership to receive the necessary patch and additional information.

However, not all users may find the update readily available. Some dealerships, like the one servicing a 2026 Skoda, reported no newer software updates. This discrepancy raises questions about the widespread availability of the fix and its effectiveness across different models and regions.

User Experiences Vary

The impact of the glitch has varied among users. Some reported sporadic issues, while others faced constant disruptions. Wireless adapters provided a temporary solution for some, but those with factory wireless support were left without options. The update’s effectiveness may also depend on the software version running on the car’s infotainment unit.

For those still experiencing issues, Google recommends seeking further assistance from their dealership. Alternatively, some users have found that CarPlay works seamlessly, suggesting that patience might be required for a comprehensive fix.

Android Auto’s Ongoing Challenges

Despite the recent update, Android Auto has a history of bugs and connectivity issues. The platform’s design for in-car use makes these problems particularly frustrating, especially when relying on navigation during a journey. The latest update, version 17.4 or newer, aims to address these concerns, but users should remain vigilant for any future issues.

In addition to bug fixes, the Android Auto team is continuously rolling out new features. Recent additions include Google Maps’ Immersive View and Speedometer features, as well as a revamped media player interface. These updates highlight Google’s commitment to improving the platform, even as it grapples with persistent connectivity problems.
