The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is shaping up to be a thrilling showdown between McLaren and Mercedesas the two teams displayed impressive speed during Friday’s practice sessions. The practice sessions saw Lando Norris and George Russell exchange blows, with Norris ultimately securing the fastest time in Free Practice 2 (FP2). The close margins and intense rivalry set the stage for an exciting weekend of racing.

McLaren’s strong showing in FP2

McLaren demonstrated their prowess in FP2, with Norris topping the timesheets and his teammate Oscar Piastri closely following. The British driver’s fastest lap of 1m 15.426s put him ahead of Russell by a narrow margin of 0.009s. Piastri also showcased McLaren’s strength, finishing third, just 0.048s behind Russell.

The session was not without drama, as Max Verstappen struggled with grip on his Red Bulland Lewis Hamilton expressed concerns about his Ferrari‘s rear end performance. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelliwho missed FP1, finished fourth, highlighting Mercedes’ consistent speed.

The battle for pole position

As the teams prepare for qualifying, the focus is on optimizing tire performance in the hot Barcelona conditions. Bradley LordMercedes’ Deputy Team Principal, noted that the pecking order appears different from Monaco, with McLaren and Ferrari closing the gap. He emphasized the importance of a strong qualifying session and race pace, as multiple pit stops may be necessary.

Norris, reflecting on his team’s performance, expressed satisfaction with McLaren’s progress but acknowledged the need for further improvement. He stated, “We’re doing a good job as a team, but these guys are just doing a better job. We have to keep working hard and give credit to them.”
