Both cars failed inspection twice but managed to pass on their third attempt. A fourth failure would have resulted in an end-of-line starting position and a drive-through penalty after the green flag. Fortunately, both teams avoided that outcome.
Consequences for car chiefs
Despite passing inspection, the teams faced penalties. Clay Chris Sherwood the car chief for the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, and Dave Jone the car chief for the No. 51 Rick Ware Racing Chevrolet, were ejected from the facility for the remainder of the race weekend.
Additionally, both teams lost their pit stall selection, meaning they will have to take whatever stalls remain after the rest of the field has chosen. This penalty could significantly impact Bell who qualified eighth on the grid. For Ware the penalty is less critical as he did not participate in qualifying after a practice spin.
Ryan Blaney secures pole position
Ryan Blaney earned the pole position for the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway, marking the fourth time this year that his No. 12 Team Penske Ford has led the field to the green flag. This is a career-high for Blaney, showcasing his consistent performance throughout the season.
Blaney’s qualifying lap of 22.225 seconds was a half-tenth faster than Chase Briscoe securing his top spot. Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson will have some work to do, starting 32nd and 30th respectively.
Unfortunate weekend for Christopher Bell
Beyond the inspection issues, Bell has had an unfortunate weekend. He was set to participate in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Friday night with Halmar-Friesen Racing. However, the race was postponed to Saturday due to inclement weather, forcing Bell to withdraw. Leland Honeyman Jr. will replace him in the No. 62 Toyota.
