In the high-octane world of NASCAR, where dreams are as abundant as the roaring engines, a unique story is unfolding. Cleetus McFarland, known to millions as a charismatic YouTuber, is making a bold transition from digital stardom to the racetrack. His journey, however, is not without its challenges and valuable lessons.
McFarland’s path to NASCAR began with a friendship forged during charity work in the hurricane-stricken regions of North Carolina. There, he met the late Greg Biffle, a former Cup Series contender who became a mentor and advocate for McFarland’s aspirations. Biffle’s tragic passing in December left a void, but it also ignited a fire within McFarland to honor his mentor’s legacy by pursuing his dream of racing in the Daytona 500.
The Road to Daytona
McFarland’s ambition to reach the Daytona 500 is a testament to his determination. However, the road to NASCAR’s most prestigious race is fraught with obstacles. McFarland, who owns a short track in Bradenton, Florida, and races a variety of cars, quickly realized that the transition to professional racing was more daunting than he had anticipated.
His breakthrough came when Richard Childress Racing (RCR) extended an offer over the spring, providing a structured pathway to the highest levels of NASCAR, including starts in the NASCAR O’Reilly Series. This opportunity reignited McFarland’s dream of competing in the Daytona 500, but it also brought new challenges.
Navigating the Challenges
McFarland’s foray into the NASCAR O’Reilly Series has been a steep learning curve. Despite successes in ARCA at both superspeedways and short tracks, his starts in the Truck and O’Reilly divisions have been eye-opening. Races in an RCR car, particularly at tracks like Rockingham and Nashville, have tested his mettle with multiple spins and penalties.
NASCAR officials have set a high bar for McFarland, requiring him to perform at a level that demonstrates his readiness for larger tracks. This includes competing in ARCA events on all Truck Series tracks and short tracks in the second-tier division. The pressure is on, but McFarland is determined to prove himself.
Advice from a Legend
Throughout this journey, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been a steadfast supporter of McFarland. On a recent episode of his Dale Jr. Download podcast, Earnhardt offered some candid advice to the aspiring racer. “Well, you know, there was a lot of mistakes,” Earnhardt acknowledged. “Everyone who gets into racing is going to bust their ass under somebody. Nashville especially. … He’s out there running laps, and I don’t think he ruined anyone’s days … I thought he did fine.”
Earnhardt’s advice is rooted in his extensive experience and understanding of the sport. He emphasized the importance of gaining experience in the ARCA series, suggesting that McFarland should focus on running all ARCA races, including those at short tracks across the country. “If he can get himself two full seasons or a couple of years in ARCA, running all the ARCA races, all of them, short tracks, everywhere, I think he would be way better off to try to tackle this O’Reilly stuff,” Earnhardt advised.
Earnhardt also highlighted the value of McFarland’s recently acquired straight rail Super/Pro Late Model, which he plans to race extensively. “He’s got a Pro Late Model that he built. Go run that. I mean, he’s got a race track. I would be at that race track running laps. … Like, right now, on a Tuesday he could be just running sets of tires at his track in his Pro,” Earnhardt suggested.
The Path Forward
McFarland’s next challenge is on the horizon. This weekend, he will compete at Michigan International Speedway in both the Truck Series for Niece Motorsports and ARCA for Rette Jones Motorsports. These races will be crucial in demonstrating his progress and readiness for the next level.
As McFarland continues to navigate the complexities of professional racing, he remains focused on his ultimate goal: the Daytona 500. With the support of legends like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the guidance of mentors like Greg Biffle, he is well on his way to turning his dream into a reality. The road ahead is challenging, but McFarland’s determination and passion for racing are undeniable.
