Volkswagen has taken a significant step into the electric campervan market with the introduction of the ID. California Cruise. Unveiled at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf this new model is based on the ID. Buzz Pro and promises to bring a fresh perspective to electric camping.

Design and Features
The ID. California Cruise is instantly recognizable with its distinctive California lettering on the liftgate and California Cruise decals on the sides. While the exterior changes are minimal, the interior is packed with features designed to enhance the camping experience.
One of the standout features is the rear platform that houses a tri-fold mattress. Measuring 80 inches long by 47.2 inches wide, the mattress is 3.5 inches thick and can comfortably accommodate two people. The van also comes with window blinds and ventilation grilles for the front side windows, ensuring privacy and comfort.
To make camping more enjoyable, the ID. California Cruise includes two camping chairs and a table which are stored beneath the rear platform. The van also features exclusive seat covers in the ‘Miwo’ design, adding a touch of style to the interior.
Power and Comfort
The ID. California Cruise is equipped with a retained power function that allows the battery to continue operating interior lights, USB charging ports, and the climate control system. This feature ensures that you stay comfortable at night, with the system capable of operating for up to 48 hours, depending on the battery’s starting charge and the outside temperature.
Additionally, the van comes with a vehicle-to-load function turning it into a giant power station that provides up to 2,000 watts of juice. This means you can power everything from coffee makers to coolers and electric cooktops, making your camping experience more convenient.
The ID. California Cruise also features a panoramic glass roof with a dedicated blackout blind, allowing you to enjoy the stars while maintaining privacy. The van is available with either a short or long wheelbase, offering flexibility to suit different needs.
Availability and Future Plans
The ID. California Cruise is set to arrive in Europe early next year, with German pricing starting at €60,761 ($70,813). While this model is not coming to the United States, Americans will have the opportunity to experience a similar model with the ID. Buzz Tourer 4Motion which features a fold-out mattress, front ventilation panels, and window blinds, as well as an exterior table and chairs.
Volkswagen has also teased that additional California EVs are coming by 2028, indicating a strong commitment to expanding its electric campervan lineup. This move extends the California lineage, which dates back to 1988, and marks the first time Volkswagen has applied the name to a fully electric production model.
