The Bugatti Tourbillon represents a bold new chapter in the brand’s illustrious history. At its heart lies a naturally aspirated V16 engine meticulously crafted by Cosworth to rev up to an exhilarating 9,000 rpm. This powerhouse, with its 8.3-liter cross-plane-crank design is not just about raw performance; it’s about creating an unforgettable auditory experience.

Bugatti’s engineers embarked on a journey of thousands of hours to perfect the exhaust sound of the Tourbillon. This wasn’t just about making it loud; it was about achieving a harmonious blend of power and refinement. The challenge was to ensure that the sound remained captivating, whether the car was running on pure electric power or the full symphony of the V16.

The Art of Acoustic Engineering

The Tourbillon’s V16 engine, combined with three electric motors delivers a staggering 1,800 horsepower. This powerplant propels the Hypercar from 0 to 62 mph in just two seconds with a top speed of 276 mph. However, making this first-ever Bugatti plug-in hybrid sound exceptional under all conditions was a unique challenge that previous models like the Veyron and Chiron did not face.

Romain Volatier, Bugatti’s head of NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) and acoustics emphasized the importance of a dirty and raw character for the Tourbillon’s exhaust. The goal was to create a building rumble rather than a clean metallic ring. This approach ensures that the Tourbillon’s sound is distinctly Bugatti, a nod to the brand’s heritage while embracing innovation.

Balancing Performance and Legality

Creating a hypercar that is both road-legal and acoustically thrilling is no small feat. The Tourbillon had to pass stringent drive-by sound tests emitting no more than 72 decibels. This figure includes not just the exhaust but also other sources of noise, such as tires and airflow. To achieve this, Bugatti’s engineers worked tirelessly to quiet these elements, allowing the exhaust to shine.

Paolo Magrone, a test driver for Bugatti, shared insights into the final stages of development. “We’re still working on small refinement and little details,” he noted. “The big chunk of the project is done, and we are here just to close this chapter. It’s been a successful and positive testing activity.”

The Evolution of Bugatti’s Sound

Throughout its history, Bugatti has experimented with various engine types, from the quad-turbocharged W16 of recent models to the straight-eights of classic prewar grand prix cars. Each era has brought a unique sonic signature, but the Tourbillon’s V16 stands out as a testament to Bugatti’s commitment to innovative engineering and acoustic excellence.

With production capped at 250 cars the Tourbillon is set to be a rare sight on the roads. Deliveries are expected to begin later this year, offering a select few the chance to experience the symphony of power and precision that is the Bugatti Tourbillon.
