Exploring the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung’s Power and Design

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a limited-edition coupe featuring a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 637 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. This rear-wheel-drive performance beast is designed for exhilarating driving experiences.

Exploring the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung's Power and Design

The automotive world has witnessed the unveiling of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung a limited-edition coupe that embodies the spirit of high-performance driving. This model, the second in the Mythos series is a testament to Mercedes-AMG’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering.

With only 30 units set for production, the CLE 646 is a rare gem that promises an unparalleled driving experience. Powered by a modified 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, this coupe delivers an impressive 637 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. The engine’s performance is further enhanced by a high-temperature cooling circuit and two low-temperature circuits for charge air and transmission oil cooling.

The Heart of the Beast: The V8 Engine

The CLE 646’s M177 EVO 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is the centerpiece of this high-performance coupe. This engine, known for its responsiveness and power, is complemented by an Akrapovic exhaust system that ensures the car sounds as good as it performs. The engine’s flat-plane crank design reduces rotating masses, improving revving characteristics and throttle response.

The V8’s power is managed by a nine-speed automatic transmission which works in tandem with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. This setup allows the CLE 646 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds and reach 124 mph in 11.4 seconds. Despite its power, the CLE 646 weighs a substantial 4,178 lbs though it is lighter than its donor car by approximately 375 lbs.

Design and Aerodynamics

The CLE 646’s design is a departure from the standard CLE, featuring a new bumper, carbon fiber splitter, and a custom hood. The car’s flared arches and massive tires, measuring 305/30 ZR 20 at the front and 335/30 ZR 20 at the rear, contribute to its aggressive stance. The fixed carbon fiber rear wing, reminiscent of the old C63 AMG Black Series, enhances both aesthetics and aerodynamics.

The coupe’s body is extensively modified to increase structural rigidity and reduce weight. Carbon fiber is used in various areas, including the vented front fenders, front apron, side sills, bonnet, roof, and rear bumper. The car’s ride height is lowered by 22 mm at the front and 16 mm at the rear, improving handling and stability.

Performance and Handling

To ensure the CLE 646 can handle its power, Mercedes-AMG has equipped it with custom suspension components developed in collaboration with KW Automotive. The four-way adjustable dampers allow for precise tuning of rebound and compression settings, providing an extraordinary level of precision and confidence on the road.

The coupe is also fitted with massive carbon ceramic brakes, featuring six-piston calipers at the front and single-piston units at the rear. These brakes, combined with the car’s advanced traction control system, ensure that the CLE 646 can be driven to its limits with confidence.

The interior of the CLE 646 reflects its performance-oriented design. Lightweight front bucket seats, carbon fiber door panels, and optional harnesses contribute to a driver-focused cabin. The rear seats have been removed to save weight, and the audio system has been simplified to focus on performance.

Mercedes-AMG has not disclosed the price of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, but all 30 units destined for production have already been sold. This limited-edition coupe represents the pinnacle of performance and exclusivity, embodying the essence of Mercedes-AMG’s engineering prowess.
