The fifth-generation Toyota Supra has left the stage, with no direct successor on the horizon. It’s surprising how brief its time with us felt, given its significant impact. To understand this phenomenon, we turn to Alex Shen, the Studio Chief Designer at Calty Design, Toyota’s innovative design studio based in California. Shen’s team was instrumental in shaping the concept car that eventually became the MkV Supra, offering valuable insights into the gap between conceptual designs and their production counterparts.
Calty Design is renowned for its exploratory work, often pushing boundaries beyond what’s feasible for production. The studio’s early studies are more about suggesting stylistic elements than final products. As Shen explains, “We’re an advanced design studio so a lot of our work is not really intended for the public consumption. Maybe those ideas aren’t quite hashed out yet, or still kind of in the works.” This experimental approach means not every design makes it to production, making the Supra’s journey even more remarkable.
The birth of the FT-1 concept
Each year, Calty designers choose projects to explore. The Supra project, initially unnamed, was one such selection. The team aimed to give Toyota’s leadership an immersive experience of their vision. At the time, sports cars were seen as financial drains, making the Supra’s approval unlikely. Shen recalls, “We hadn’t heard anything about any production plans in the future. We had a pretty good image at the time already.” The challenge was to capture the spirit of the Supra which had evolved from a Celica Supra to a pure sports car.
The team asked, “What should it be next?” The answer was the FT-1 concept. However, aesthetics alone wouldn’t convince the higher-ups. Shen emphasizes, “You’re supposed to drive these sports cars. It should be visceral. It’s not enough just to put a car out there, right?” The problem was, they had no physical prototype—just a design. This is where Polyphony Digital and Gran Turismo entered the picture.
A digital prototype changes everything
With no physical car to showcase, the team turned to digital simulation. Shen shares, “So we put it in the machine. We put it in Gran Turismo.” After a few virtual laps in the digital FT-1, Akio-san, a key figure at Toyota, was convinced. The green light was given to build a show car, a rarity in today’s automotive industry. Notably, the joint platform with BMW and its complexities weren’t even on Calty’s radar at this point.
The team faced the daunting task of reconciling their design with the physical constraints of the shared hardware and the financial realities of a program not expected to turn a profit. Shen reflects, “Given all that, it’s a wonder they made the thing at all, right?” This behind-the-scenes look reveals the passion and perseverance that brought the fifth-generation Supra to life, despite the odds.
