The world of horse racing is on the brink of a significant transformation with the launch of the Horse Racing League (HRL) a pioneering team-based competition set to debut in February 2027. This innovative venture, led by Greg Maffei former CEO of Liberty Media and Danny Epstein founder of Skylark aims to infuse new energy into the sport by creating a structured, season-long championship.
The HRL will feature 10 teams competing across three prestigious venues: Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles, Gulfstream Park in Miami, and Keeneland in Lexington. Each team will consist of eight horses, selected during a live draft event in November 2026. The league’s unique format, which includes a points-driven championship and high-stakes betting, is designed to engage fans throughout the year.
The Vision Behind the Horse Racing League
Greg Maffei, who played a pivotal role in transforming Formula 1 into a global phenomenon, brings his expertise to the HRL. “Formula 1 demonstrated what can happen when you bring fans to a historic sport in a modern way through storytelling and social media“, Maffei stated. “Horse racing has all the thrilling elements: exciting competition, heritage, drama, glamour, and star power.”
The HRL seeks to capitalize on these elements by introducing a team-based structure that fosters dramatic rivalries and high-stakes competition. The league’s format includes a 10-horse field for every race, with more than $10 million in purses and end-of-season prizes on the line each year. This structure ensures consistent, engaging content for fans to follow throughout the season.
Celebrity and Industry Backing
The HRL has garnered support from some of the most prominent names in horse racing and entertainment. Among the founding teams are Godolphin the world’s largest racing operation, and WinStar one of the United States’ elite breeding and racing businesses. Additionally, a group formed by Vinnie Viola owner of the NHL’s Florida PanthersGary Barber founder of Spyglass Media Group and Chris Pucillo an asset management executive, will also participate.
“Horse racing already commands one of the largest single-day audiences in American sports“, said Vinnie Viola. “Investing in a team-based concept designed to carry that momentum across a full season is what makes the HRL so exciting for us.” Gary Barber added, “This is a rare opportunity to be a part of something from the ground up in a sport that I am incredibly passionate about.”
The Future of the Horse Racing League
The HRL is not only focused on its inaugural season but also has plans for expansion. The league is in discussions to add three more cities by 2029 further broadening its appeal and reach. The live draft event in November 2026 is expected to generate significant buzz, creating a marquee offseason moment for fans, media, and partners.
The venture has received backing from the US Jockey Club with Chair Everett Dobson expressing enthusiasm for the new concept. “We’re excited to see a new concept come to life in our sport, and we know this is the right leadership group to make it a success“, Dobson said. “We have a common goal to attract new fans and give longtime enthusiasts more exciting experiences. It’s a win for everyone in the industry, from the tracks to the horsemen who make race day happen.”
As the HRL prepares for its debut, the horse racing community and sports enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating a new era of competition and entertainment. With its innovative format, celebrity backing, and strategic vision, the Horse Racing League is poised to redefine the sport and captivate a global audience.
