The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has announced a significant leadership change in its Automotive Department. Effective September 1, 2026, Andrew Peltier has been appointed as Special Representative, bringing a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to union values to the role.

From Shop Floor to Union Leadership
Andrew Peltier’s journey with the IAM began in July 2013 when he joined Twin Cities Automotive Local 737 as an automotive technician at Schmelz Countryside Volkswagen, Saab, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo. His initial role as a Parts Counterperson marked the start of his active involvement in union representation.
Peltier’s leadership qualities quickly became evident. He was appointed Shop Steward in 2017 and elected to the St. Paul Auto Dealers Bargaining Committee in 2019. His dedication to his fellow members and his ability to navigate complex workplace issues made him a natural fit for higher responsibilities.
Key Milestones in Peltier’s Career
Peltier’s career with the IAM is marked by several key milestones that highlight his growth and commitment to the union:
- February 2020 Joined the District 77 staff as an organizer
- Appointed Business Representative
- September 2023 Became Assistant Directing Business Representative
- June 2024 Appointed Directing Business Representative for IAM District 77
In his most recent role, Peltier guided the day-to-day operations of District 77 and represented members across Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. His experience in contract enforcementgrievance handling and workplace conflict resolution has been instrumental in his career progression.
Peltier’s Impact on the Automotive Department
IAM International President Brian Bryant praised Peltier’s appointment, highlighting his journey as an example of the union’s strength. “Andrew’s journey from the shop floor to union leadership is a great example of the strength of the IAM,” Bryant said. “He has consistently stepped up to serve his fellow members, from his days as a Shop Steward to his work as an organizer, Business Representative, and district leader.”
Peltier’s extensive experience in representing IAM members, organizing workers, and leading union campaigns makes him a valuable addition to the Automotive Department. IAM Automotive Director Craig Hughes emphasized Peltier’s understanding of union values and his commitment to strengthening the labor movement.

He served as Organizing Director for the Minnesota State Council of Machinists and as an Executive Board member of the Minnesota AFL-CIO.
