The NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series witnessed a thrilling climax at the Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. J.R. Gray the reigning world champion, etched his name in history by defeating Justin Bond in a high-stakes final round. This victory not only marked Gray’s first win of the season but also solidified his position in the Road to the Championship.
The event, held at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park was the eighth of eleven races in the 2026 season. Powered by CFH Superchargers and presented by Shelton Insurance it attracted top-tier competitors vying for the prestigious Diamond Wally trophy. Gray’s triumph was a testament to his team’s relentless effort and strategic prowess, as they overcame challenges, including a motor swap after the first round.
Gray’s Path to Victory
Gray’s journey to the finals was nothing short of spectacular. He outmaneuvered formidable opponents such as Alex LaughlinMike Thielen and Billy Banaka in the preceding rounds. His Al-Anabi Performance Chevrolet Camaro roared to a 5.701-second pass at 252.47 mph securing his victory over Bond’s 5.759-second run at 251.72 mph.
Bond, who qualified No. 1 at the event, reached the finals for the third time this season. His impressive run included victories over Chip KingStan Shelton and Michael Stavrinos. Despite falling short in the final round, Bond’s performance was a highlight of the event, marking his first win at Indy.
The Road to the Championship
With this victory, Gray has positioned himself closer to the top spot in the standings. The win was particularly significant as it was the second of five races in the Pro Mod’s Road to the Championship. Bond, now leading the points, holds a seven-point advantage over Stavrinos. Banaka is just 10 points behind, while Gray moved up to fifth, 40 points behind Bond.
The JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series will continue with the NHRA Nationals at Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, N.C. from Sept. 25-27. This upcoming event promises more intense competition as the top 10 drivers in each professional class vie for the championship.
Other Winners at the U.S. Nationals
The 72nd Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals saw victories across various classes. Shawn Langdon claimed the Top Fuel title with a 3.804-second run at 333.99 mph defeating Tony Stewart. Jack Beckman won the Funny Car category, while Dallas Glenn and Matt Smith emerged victorious in Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle respectively.
The event also featured notable performances in specialty and sportsman categories. Scott Taylor became the first Outlaw Street winner in U.S. Nationals history, and the Smiths gave the Pro Stock Motorcycle final round a unique twist with a husband-and-wife showdown.
