Marquez clinches Motegi victory, trails Martin by two points

The Motul Grand Prix of Japan unfolded under clear skies at the Mobility Resort Motegi, where the seventh-time world champion Marc Marquez delivered a decisive performance. Riding the Lenovo Team Ducati Desmosedici GP26 equipped with Michelin tires, he crossed the line after 24 laps ahead of his closest rival by a razor-thin margin of 1.363 seconds.

On the podium beside Marquez, Jorge Martin secured second place on his Aprilia Racing RS-GP26 while fellow Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi completed the top three. The fourth spot went to Enea Bastianini on a Red Bull KTM Tech3 RC16 and Raul Fernandez rounded out the points-scoring positions in fifth on a SuperFile Trackhouse Aprilia RS-GP26.

Race dynamics from pole to checkered flag

Martin started from pole and immediately claimed the holeshot, forcing Marquez into a trailing position. Early on, the field settled into a rhythm, with Alex marquez of BK8 Gresini Racing incurring two Long Lap penalties that shuffled the order behind the leaders. Hard rear Michelin tires were the mandatory choice for all competitors, a decision that added an extra layer of strategy to the 24-lap sprint.

By the fifth lap, the gap between Martin and Marquez hovered around 0.4 seconds, both posting lap times near 1:43.6. Bezzecchi trailed the champion by just 0.6 seconds, while the rest of the field struggled to keep pace. At lap ten, the two title contenders had extended their lead to 1.9 seconds ahead of Bezzecchi, who began to feel the pressure of the relentless pace.

Key overtakes and fastest laps

The decisive move came on lap eleven at Turn 9, when Marquez executed an inside overtake, pinning his Ducati on the apex and establishing a clear advantage over Martin. The Spaniard responded by unleashing a series of blistering laps, including a personal best of 1:43.291, which widened his lead to over a second.

Mid-race, both Bezzecchi and Bastianini recorded the fastest sectors, briefly closing the gap to the leaders. Bastianini, in particular, set a fourth consecutive rapid lap in the final stages, but it was insufficient to disrupt Marquez’s comfortable margin as he headed into the last lap with a 1.2-second cushion.

Championship implications and the road ahead

The Motegi result reshapes the title fight dramatically. Martin, who entered the race with 333 points, now trails Marquez’s 331 points by a mere two points. Bezzecchi remains third with 284 points, while the rest of the field stays well behind. The next venue, the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia, promises a crucial showdown as the leaders aim to either cement or overturn the slim advantage.

Beyond the championship, the race highlighted the competitiveness of the Aprilia package, with both Martin and Bezzecchi on the RS-GP26 making strong showings. It also underscored the reliability of the Ducati Desmosedici platform on hard-compound Michelin rubber, a factor that may influence tyre strategy in the upcoming rounds.
