The automotive world is witnessing a rare event: the introduction of a genuinely new, high-performance engine. In an era dominated by hybrid and electric powertrains, RUF has defied the trend by unveiling its revolutionary boxer-8 engine at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
This groundbreaking engine, destined for a future road-going supercar, marks a significant milestone in automotive engineering. The 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder boxer engine is making its debut in a modified CTR3 prototype which will be driven by race driver Tanner Foust throughout the festival.
The Engineering Marvel Behind RUF’s Boxer-8 Engine
The boxer-8 engine is a technological marvel, producing over 1,000 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque without any hybrid assistance. This power output rivals that of the Lamborghini Revuelto making it a formidable contender in the high-performance arena.
RUF’s engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission also built in-house by the German brand. The prototype showcased at Goodwood has been stretched by 3.93 inches to accommodate the new engine, featuring a custom black-and-yellow livery inspired by the legendary CTR Yellowbird.
A Historic Moment for RUF and the Automotive Industry
Company founder Alois Ruf described the introduction of the boxer-8 engine as a defining moment in the company’s history. “For RUF, the Boxer 8 is one of those moments. A boxer-eight has never been part of our story, or anyone else’s in this form, so we decided to write a new chapter in automotive history,” Ruf stated.
The engine’s debut at Goodwood is not just a showcase of RUF’s engineering prowess but also a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation. The event provides a platform for automotive enthusiasts to witness the engine in action, as Tanner Foust takes the prototype up the hill climb multiple times a day.
The Future of RUF’s Boxer-8 Engine
While the boxer-8 engine is currently housed in the CTR3 prototype, RUF has yet to announce when it will premiere in a new production vehicle. The anticipation surrounding this engine’s future applications is palpable, as it promises to redefine the boundaries of performance and engineering in the automotive world.
As the Goodwood Festival of Speed continues, all eyes are on RUF and its groundbreaking boxer-8 engine. This event marks a significant step forward for the brand and the automotive industry as a whole, showcasing the enduring allure of high-performance internal combustion engines.
