The mining industry is witnessing a revolutionary shift with the introduction of the world’s first electric mining truck powered by sodium-ion batteries. Delivered on August 4, 2026 to the Tangshan Sanyou mine this innovative vehicle represents a collaborative effort between Hina Battery and Tonly Heavy Industry.

This groundbreaking project aims to demonstrate the viability of sodium-ion technology in the demanding conditions of open-pit mining operations. The truck, built on Tonly’s TLE120 platform is equipped with Hina Battery’s Haixing series sodium-ion battery system boasting a substantial 676 kWh capacity and an impressive 165 Wh/kg energy density.

The advantages of sodium-ion batteries in mining operations

The new electric mining truck offers several compelling advantages over traditional diesel-powered vehicles. One of the most significant benefits is its rapid charging capability allowing for a full charge in just 20-25 minutes. This quick turnaround is crucial for maintaining productivity in mining operations where downtime can be costly.

Additionally, the sodium-ion battery system boasts an impressive cycle life of over 8,000 cycles which closely aligns with the This durability ensures that the vehicle can withstand the rigorous demands of mining operations without frequent battery replacements.

Another key advantage is the battery’s performance in low-temperature environments. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries sodium-ion cells exhibit minimal capacity decay in cold conditions. This makes the vehicle particularly suitable for operations in northern regions during winter months, addressing the common issue of range drop experienced by lithium-powered electric trucks.

Environmental benefits and future applications

The electric mining truck eliminates exhaust emissions and significantly reduces noise pollution compared to its diesel counterparts. These environmental benefits are particularly valuable in mining operations, where air quality and noise levels can be significant concerns.

Following its delivery, the truck will be deployed for actual mining operations to collect real-world data under heavy-load conditions. This information will be used to optimize future iterations of the product, potentially leading to wider adoption of sodium-ion technology in the mining industry.

The success of this project could pave the way for similar applications in other heavy-duty industries. In fact, FAW Jiefang, a division of the FAW Group, has already announced successful tests of a heavy-duty truck powered by sodium-ion batteries developed by Hina Battery. This indicates a growing interest in the technology for commercial transportation applications.
