Tesla has taken a significant leap in its autonomous vehicle ambitions by registering 45 Cybercabs with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. These purpose-built vehicles, designed for full self-driving capabilities, are part of Tesla’s expanding Robotaxi fleet and lack traditional controls like steering wheels and pedals.

The registration comes just ahead of an exclusive event scheduled for September 3, 2026, at the Gigafactory Texas in Austin. This event will feature the Cybercab in public road tests with real passengers, although the vehicle remains in the testing phase and is not yet part of a commercial service open to the general public.

The Cybercab Launch Event in Austin

The upcoming event is described as an invite-only launch, targeting select clients familiar with Tesla’s Robotaxi service and winners of contests organized by the company. This controlled environment allows Tesla to gather feedback and refine the Cybercab’s performance before a wider rollout.

The Cybercab, a sleek two-seater coupe, was first unveiled to the public on October 10, 2024. Designed exclusively for autonomous operation, it represents Tesla’s vision for the future of urban mobility. The vehicle’s lack of traditional controls underscores its commitment to full autonomy, although details about emergency manual controls remain undisclosed.

Expansion of Tesla’s Robotaxi Service

Tesla’s Robotaxi service has been operational in Austin since June 22, 2025, initially covering an area of approximately 18-20 square miles with safety monitors on board. The service has since expanded, with reports indicating additional geofenced zones in Austin and other Texas cities like Dallas. However, specific details about the extent of this expansion remain unclear.

The Texas legislature has played a crucial role in facilitating this growth by passing Senate Bill 2807 during the 89th Legislative Session. This bill established the Automated Vehicle Authorization and Enforcement Program which sets the regulatory framework for Level 4 autonomous vehicles. The program, set to be fully implemented by 2027, allows Tesla and other companies to operate autonomous vehicles within defined parameters.

Tesla’s Robotaxi Fleet and Future Plans

As of now, Tesla has registered a total of 314 robotaxis in Texas, including the 45 Cybercabs. The remaining vehicles are primarily Model Y models adapted for autonomous operation. While registration does not guarantee immediate deployment, it signifies Tesla’s intent to scale its Robotaxi service rapidly.

A spokesperson for Tesla Robotaxi described the current developments as “a step enormous for the company toward the future.” However, Tesla still faces competition from established players like Waymo which currently operates the largest fleet of autonomous vehicles with the broadest service area. The introduction of the Cybercab is seen as Tesla’s first major response to Waymo’s dominance in the robotaxi market.

Despite these advancements, Tesla’s Robotaxi service has not been without incident. On September 1, 2026, a Cybercab struck and killed a 4-year-old golden retriever near Zilker Park in Austin. The vehicle, operating without a human occupant, did not stop after the collision. Witnesses reported that the Cybercab continued driving as if nothing had happened. The incident is currently under investigation by the Austin Police Department.

The tragic event has raised questions about the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles. Owner Elena Vasquez expressed her distress, stating, “He was just being a dog. I want answers about why that car didn’t stop.” This incident highlights the challenges Tesla and other companies must address as they work to integrate autonomous vehicles into everyday life.
