The season-ending ARCA Menards Series race at Kansas unfolded as a 100-lap battle that would decide the 2026 champion. Entering the event, winless Jake Bollman led his Nitro Motorsports teammate Thomas Annunziata by 16 points, setting the stage for a tense showdown between the two drivers who shared the same team.
Early contact turns the rivalry into a feud
Only twelve laps into the contest, the two title contenders tangled on Lap 16 while fighting for third place. Both drivers were side-by-side, splitting a lapped car, when Bollman entered the corner too shallow and drifted up the track. Their wheels touched, sending Annunziata into a full spin while Bollman slid sideways. The incident sparked a retaliatory move on Lap 24 when Annunziata brushed Bollman’s bumper on the frontstretch, sending the No. 20 car into another spin. Team management intervened, warning that any further contact could lead to the No. 70 being parked.
Mid-race wrecks raise the stakes
Despite the early drama, Bollman reclaimed the lead by the 40-lap mark, appearing to have the championship under control. That illusion vanished when Will Kimmel spun ahead, leaving Bollman to collide with the sideways No. 69. The impact was severe, and a second strike from Austin Vaughn slammed the door of the No. 20, leaving the car heavily damaged. Although the crash relegated Bollman to 23rd, the team worked feverishly to rebuild the vehicle, keeping his title hopes alive.
In the garage, a frustrated Bollman explained, “I didn’t really mean to get into him. I just got into the corner way too flat. The lap car gave me no room and I had nowhere to go. Tried to keep it out of him as best I can. But contact was made and it is what it is, right?” He added that he believed Annunziata’s retaliation could hurt the younger driver’s career, noting, “If I was in his position, I don’t know if I would have retaliated the way he did.”
Final restart, tiebreaker and the ultimate victor
With 25 laps remaining, Annunziata needed a seventh-place finish or better to erase the 16-point gap. A caution for a spinning car bunched the field together, giving Bollman a chance to climb back. He surged to 22nd, passed Kimmel, and later moved to 21st after overtaking another retiring car, forcing Annunziata to aim for at least fifth.
Another caution with 13 laps to go – this time for Landon S. Huffman – shuffled the lineup. Annunziata pitted for additional work, rejoined in ninth, and quickly fought his way up, passing Andy Jankowiak to clinch fifth place. Both drivers ended the race with equal points, but Annunziata secured the championship on a tiebreaker thanks to his July victory at Lime Rock Park.
Reflecting on the chaotic finale, Annunziata said, “It was crazy. I came in without any preconceived notions. Jake did a good job, too, but we both had bad luck. The early contact was eye for an eye, and I’m proud of my guys. The tiebreaker win felt great.”
While the championship drama unfolded, Carson Brown claimed the race win, overtaking Gio Ruggiero in the final laps to secure back-to-back victories and close the 2026 season on a high note.
