The Circuit of the Americas in Austin witnessed a thrilling Hyperpole session where Ferrari‘s Antonio Giovinazzi secured the Driving the #51 Ferrari 499P Giovinazzi set a blistering lap time of 1m52.445s matching Jack Aitken‘s time in the #38 Cadillac-Jota but claiming the top spot by setting his time first.
This victory marks Giovinazzi’s second pole position at this circuit, following his triumph in 2024. The session was fraught with challenges, including unpredictable wind conditions and extreme temperatures, making it a testament to Giovinazzi’s skill and the 499P‘s performance.
Giovinazzi’s Strategic Victory
Giovinazzi’s journey to the top spot was not without its hurdles. He admitted that the session was not easy requiring him to fight to get the car working properly amidst the constantly changing wind directions. Despite not being entirely satisfied with the car’s performance, he managed to set a perfect lap that secured the Hyperpole.
The Italian driver emphasized the importance of setting his time before Aitken, stating, We were lucky to set the time before Aitken. This Hyperpole is worth one point for the championship and a good starting position. Now, we have to finish the job, and we’ll need to stay focused because the important points are won in the race.
Aitken’s Near Miss
Jack Aitken, driving for Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA narrowly missed out on the pole position. He expressed surprise at how close he was to securing the top spot, stating, I didn’t realise I was so close to pole!. Aitken acknowledged the challenging conditions, noting that managing more than one good lap on the same tyres was extremely difficult in the sweltering heat.
Aitken’s team did an excellent job fine-tuning the car after Free Practice 3 securing a front-row starting position. He remains optimistic about the race, stating, We’ll see how it goes.
Ferrari’s Strong Performance and Future Prospects
Ferrari has shown remarkable consistency at the Circuit of the Americas, securing its third consecutive pole position in Austin. The team’s #50 Ferrari 499P driven by Nicklas Nielsen finished fifth on the grid, just 0.428 seconds behind Giovinazzi. Nielsen had set the fastest time in the initial qualifying session but struggled to replicate that pace in the Hyperpole.
Despite the setback, Nielsen remains confident about the race, stating, The race will be long and very hot, but given the 499P’s potential on this circuit, we can aim for a good result.
The current championship standings see Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado alongside Giovinazzi in fourth place, 17 points off the top. Pier Guidi emphasized the team’s determination to make up ground in the title fight, stating, We’re third in the championship and we’re trying to make up ground in the title fight.
Calado urged calm and composure, highlighting the team’s optimism for the second half of the season. He emphasized the importance of focusing on each race and picking up points wherever possible. The team’s confidence is further bolstered by engineer Ferdinando Cannizzo who praised the team’s work on the car’s set-up and optimisation.
