Aptera and Launch Design collaborate to accelerate solar electric vehicle manufacturing

Aptera Motors has joined forces with Launch Design to fast-track the production of its solar-powered electric vehicles, aiming for more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing.

Aptera and Launch Design collaborate to accelerate solar electric vehicle manufacturing

In a significant move for the future of sustainable transportation, Aptera Motors has announced a strategic partnership with Launch Design, a leading design-for-manufacturing company based in China. This collaboration aims to accelerate the production of Aptera’s innovative solar electric vehicles (EVs) making them more accessible and affordable for consumers worldwide.

The partnership, valued at approximately $44 million will leverage Launch Design’s extensive experience and global supply chain to enhance Aptera’s manufacturing capabilities. With over 3,000 employees and a portfolio of more than 400 vehicle models Launch Design has worked with major automakers like TeslaCadillacRenaultBYD and Chevrolet.

Streamlining Production with Global Expertise

Launch Design will provide Aptera with access to its overseas pilot production facility, where the first units of the solar EV will be assembled. This initial batch will be produced in China, with the assembly processes subsequently transferred to Aptera’s headquarters in Carlsbad, California. The collaboration includes the development of assembly fixtures and processes, ensuring a smooth transition to high-volume production.

Aptera has already ordered the first 40 production bodies and chassis which are expected to roll off the assembly line in the fourth quarter of 2026. The partnership will cover various aspects of production, including assembly fixtures, tooling, vehicle testing, and pilot production. Launch Design’s investment will also support high-volume production work, further solidifying the alliance’s commitment to scaling up Aptera’s operations.

Financial and Strategic Benefits

Under the terms of the agreement, Aptera will cover two-thirds of the approved program costs, while Launch Design will contribute the remaining third, up to $15 million in the form of warrants to purchase Aptera stock. This financial structure allows Aptera to conserve cash as production scales, aligning Launch Design’s interests with Aptera’s success.

Chris Anthony Co-CEO of Aptera, highlighted the strategic benefits of the partnership: “This investment enhances our resources, allowing us to bring proven design-for-manufacturing expertise and a global supply chain to Carlsbad without taking on the capital burden of building that expertise from scratch.” He further noted that Launch Design’s experience is expected to shorten the path to high-volume production and reduce materials costs, with early indications already showing improvements in unit economics.

Expanding Horizons and Future Plans

The collaboration with Launch Design extends beyond manufacturing. Aptera will gain access to Launch Design’s international supplier network, enabling the startup to tap into affordable suppliers without the need for extensive research and development. This strategic advantage is crucial for transforming Aptera’s solar-powered three-wheeler from a demonstration project into a sustainable business.

Launch Design’s supply base is also positioned to deliver finished subassemblies directly to Aptera, simplifying the final assembly process. With a robust partner like Launch Design, Aptera can explore expanding production into other markets in the future, where the demand for highly efficient solar vehicles is significant.

As Aptera continues to innovate in the field of solar mobility, this partnership with Launch Design marks a pivotal step towards achieving its mission of advancing efficient transportation. The collaboration promises to bring Aptera’s vision of sustainable, solar-powered vehicles closer to reality, benefiting both the company and its customers worldwide.
