The BMW iX3 2026 has emerged as one of the most refined electric vehicles (EVs) available, boasting rapid charging capabilities, excellent efficiency, and cutting-edge technology. As BMW’s first model in the Neue Klasse family, the iX3 has set a high bar for performance and innovation.
To further evaluate its capabilities, the YouTube channel Out of Spec Roaming conducted a 10% challenge testing the iX3’s suitability for long-distance travel. This test involved charging the vehicle from a 10% state of charge for just 15 minutes and then driving it on the highway until the battery level returned to 10%. The results provide valuable insights into the iX3’s charging performance, real-world range, and efficiency.
Optimal Charging Conditions
The test began by connecting the iX3 to a high-power DC fast charger with the battery fully preconditioned to maximize performance. After 15 minutes of charging, the session was halted, and the vehicle set off on the highway at a constant speed of 120 km/h (74 mph).
The test concluded when the battery level dropped back to 10%, simulating a quick stop during a real-world road trip. In this instance, the iX3 xDrive50 covered 238 km (148 miles) with an average energy efficiency of 24.2 kWh/100 km (2.56 miles/kWh or 38.9 kWh/100 mi).
Real-World Range and Efficiency
While the results are commendable, they also indicate that iX3 owners can extend their driving range between stops by spending a bit more time at the charger. With a battery capacity of 108 kWh, an 80% charge would yield a real-world range of 327 km (203 miles). According to BMW, charging from 10% to 80% takes approximately 21 minutes.
A full charge should provide a highway range of 468 km (291 miles), a notable achievement for a large family SUV. For comparison, the iX3’s EPA-estimated range is 698 km (434 miles), based on a mix of high- and low-speed driving. In the WLTP cycle, the iX3 can reach up to 805 km (500 miles) on a single charge.
Charging Performance
The iX3’s charging performance was impressive, with the maximum input power reaching 407 kW initially and maintaining above 400 kW until the battery reached approximately 20% state of charge. Subsequently, the charging power decreased to 360 kW at 30%, 250 kW at 40%, and 200 kW at 50%.
After 15 minutes of charging, the iX3’s battery level increased from 10% to 65%, averaging 257 kW during the session.
Market Impact and Future Prospects
The BMW iX3 2026 is shaping up to be a well-rounded vehicle, arriving at a crucial time for the American market, which is seeing a decline in electric vehicle options. The SUV has already achieved significant success in Europe, surpassing BMW’s expectations. In the U.S., preorders have recently begun, with the first deliveries scheduled for late September.
Additionally, the long-wheelbase BMW iX3 for China has been officially rated with an impressive range of 919 km (571 miles) under the CLTC test cycle. This rating exceeds BMW’s initial estimate by 19 km (12 miles). The long-wheelbase model can add 400 km (249 miles) of range in just ten minutes of charging, with the battery pack charging from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes.
BMW has demonstrated the iX3’s efficiency during an endurance challenge, covering more than 800 km (497 miles) without recharging. The company estimates that if driven until the battery was completely depleted, the long-wheelbase iX3 could cover up to 840 km (522 miles).
The stretched iX3 features a sixth-generation battery pack with round cells and 108.7 kWh of usable energy. This model is not exclusive to China and will also be available in India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Looking ahead, the newly revealed long-wheelbase iX5 is projected to achieve a CLTC range of up to 1,000 km (621 miles). The standard iX5 features BMW’s largest battery pack to date, with a usable energy content of 141 kWh, promising even greater performance.
