The automotive world is abuzz with the launch of the Freelander 8 a bold new SUV from the collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery. This vehicle, the first under the newly revived Freelander brand, has already made waves by securing over 10,000 pre-orders in just 48 hours since its debut in China on August 14.

The Freelander 8 is not just another SUV; it’s a statement of intent from Chery Jaguar Land Rover combining the heritage of Land Rover with cutting-edge Chinese technology. With a starting price of 339,900 yuan (approximately 40,000 euros), it positions itself as a luxury offering in the competitive Chinese market.

The Freelander 8: A Closer Look

The Freelander 8 boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 5.12 meters in length, 2.05 meters in width, and 1.93 meters in height, with a 3.04-meter wheelbase. Its design is a nod to the rugged aesthetics of Land Rover, featuring a vertical front, clean lines, and a distinctive triangular rear window. The Castle Body design language gives it a robust lower section and a lighter upper section, creating a unique visual appeal.

Under the hood, the Freelander 8 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder range extender combined with two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 829 CV. This setup allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. The vehicle is equipped with a 60.3 kWh battery provided by CATL offering an electric-only range of approximately 300 km.

Advanced Technology and Features

The Freelander 8 is packed with advanced technology, both inside and out. It features the i-ATS Intelligent All-Terrain system, which manages different driving modes and works in conjunction with a mechanical front differential lock, an electronic rear limited-slip differential, and a virtual central differential lock. The SUV also comes with dual-chamber pneumatic suspensions for enhanced off-road capability.

Inside, the Freelander 8 offers a highly technological cabin. The dashboard is dominated by an 8K panoramic display spanning 46.3 inches (nearly 1.2 meters wide), accompanied by a 15.6-inch central screen. The system is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 chip, and the advanced driver-assistance system is provided by Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 supported by an 896-line LiDAR and additional sensors.

Global Ambitions and Future Plans

The Freelander 8 is just the beginning for the new Freelander brand. The joint venture between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover plans to launch six models over the next five years, with some expected to be more compact and better suited for the European market. After its successful debut in China, the Freelander 8 will next be introduced in the Middle East with preparations already underway.

The brand has set its sights on a global expansion, aiming to reach over 90 countries within the next five years. This ambitious plan includes establishing a network of approximately 1,100 dealerships worldwide. While the exact details for the European market are still under wraps, indications suggest that the Freelander brand could make its debut in Europe as early as 2027 with a more comprehensive lineup expected by 2028.

The Freelander 8 represents a significant evolution from the initial project announced in 2026 which initially focused on the Chinese market before considering export opportunities. With its blend of heritage, innovation, and global ambition, the Freelander 8 is poised to make a lasting impact on the automotive landscape.
