The automotive landscape in Japan is witnessing a significant shift with the introduction of the fourth-generation Nissan Elgrand. This latest iteration marks a bold departure from its predecessor, combining cutting-edge technology with a luxurious interior to reclaim its status in the premium minivan segment. After a prolonged hiatus since its 1997 debut, the Elgrand returns with a mission to challenge the dominant Toyota Alphard.
While the Elgrand remains exclusive to the Japanese market, its arrival is a testament to Nissan’s commitment to innovation and luxury. The new model introduces a host of features designed to appeal to discerning buyers, from its striking exterior to its advanced hybrid powertrain and opulent cabin.
The Elgrand’s Radical Redesign
The new Elgrand’s design is a departure from conventional minivan aesthetics. Inspired by the 2026 Hyper Tourer Concept and Nissan’s Timeless Japanese Futurism design language, the Elgrand sports a radical front grille and daytime running lights that give it a concept-car appearance. The elongated body and flattened rear evoke the sleek lines of a maglev train, reinforcing its premium positioning.
The intricate designs of the front grille and rear lamps are inspired by traditional kumiko woodworking adding a touch of cultural heritage to the modern design. The wheels feature an ichimatsu checkboard pattern achieved through a combination of resin finisher and machined aluminum, enhancing the vehicle’s distinctive look.
Advanced Hybrid Technology and Performance
Under the hood, the Elgrand is equipped with Nissan’s third-generation e-Power hybrid system paired with the e-4orce electric all-wheel-drive system. This setup includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine that acts solely as a generator, while an electric motor drives the wheels. The system delivers over 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque ensuring robust performance and efficiency.
The Elgrand also features an Intelligent Dynamic Suspension system that continuously monitors the road ahead and adjusts damping response for a smoother ride. The e-4orce all-wheel-drive system further enhances stability and vehicle dynamics, making it a compelling choice for chauffeur-driven experiences.
Luxurious Interior and Premium Features
The interior of the Elgrand is a sanctuary of comfort and technology. The second row features captain’s chairs while the top trim level includes Zero-Gravity seats with ottomans and dual-recline backrests, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy the journey. A 22-speaker Bose sound system ensures an immersive audio experience, complemented by dual 14.3-inch screens and 64-color ambient lighting.
Nissan has also focused on practicality, with enlarged sliding-door windows, progressive seating for better visibility, and a reworked cargo area that can accommodate seven carry-on suitcases with all seats in use. Additional features include easier-access side steps and a half-open sliding-door function for added convenience.
The new Elgrand is priced at approximately $42,300 in Japan, with plans to expand to other markets in the future. With over 6,000 orders already secured, Nissan is optimistic about the Elgrand’s potential to drive future growth and reclaim its position in the premium minivan market.
