Genesis, the premium arm of Hyundai Motor Group, is making bold strides to expand its presence in the luxury automotive market. The brand is exploring the development of a compact electric vehicle (EV) to slot below the current GV60, while also advancing plans for a V8-powered mid-engined supercar. These initiatives reflect Genesis’ strategic approach to diversify its portfolio and compete with established luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW.
The upcoming GV90, set to debut in the coming weeks, will serve as the brand’s flagship luxury model. This three-row, all-electric SUV aims to rival the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9, showcasing Genesis’ commitment to innovation and luxury. The GV90 is expected to feature cutting-edge technology, including a ‘theatre screen’ for in-car entertainment and Rolls-Royce-style coach doors, positioning it as a top-tier offering in the Genesis lineup.
Exploring the Compact EV Market
Genesis Europe Managing Director Peter Kronschnabl has hinted at the possibility of a smaller EV model, potentially based on the Hyundai IONIQ 3 platform. This compact EV would cater to the growing demand for affordable luxury vehicles. Kronschnabl emphasized the need for Genesis to evaluate fast-growing segments to nurture customer loyalty and ensure long-term sustainability.
“We’re evaluating this still but [have] nothing to confirm,” Kronschnabl stated. He added, “For a brand that is evolving, we need to look at fast-growing segments where we might need to be present in order to nurture customers.” The potential compact EV could draw design inspiration from the Genesis Mint concept, unveiled in, which showcased a premium electric city car.
However, Kronschnabl cautioned against entering segments without long-term prospects. He noted, “There are some niches, for instance, there’s not a real premium pick-up truck. But is that a segment you should enter?” This strategic prudence underscores Genesis’ focus on sustainable growth rather than chasing short-term opportunities.
The Magma GT Concept and High-Performance Ambitions
In addition to exploring the compact EV market, Genesis is also advancing its high-performance ambitions with the Magma GT Concept. This V8-powered mid-engined sports car is expected to hit the market in the coming years, competing with the likes of Mercedes-Benz AMG and BMW M. The Magma GT Concept represents a significant step for Genesis in the high-performance vehicle segment.
Genesis has already made strides in the electric vehicle market with models like the GV60 and the upcoming GV90. The brand’s first hybrid is expected to launch later this year, followed by an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) in 2026. Despite this focus on electrification, Genesis remains committed to diversifying its powertrain options to cater to a broader range of customers.
The Hyundai IONIQ 3, which could serve as the basis for the potential compact Genesis EV, offers two battery pack options: 42.2 kWh and 61 kWh. These provide WLTP ranges of up to 213 miles (344 km) and 308 miles (496 km), respectively. The base model starts at £22,245 ($29,800) in the UK, making it an attractive option for those seeking an affordable luxury EV.
As Genesis continues to expand its lineup, the brand is poised to make a significant impact in the luxury automotive market. With a focus on innovation, performance, and sustainability, Genesis is well-positioned to challenge established luxury brands and attract a new generation of discerning customers.
