Hamilton Voices Disappointment After Early Retirement at Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Ferrari's Sao Paulo Grand Prix concluded in disappointment, as both drivers faced challenges that prevented them from completing the race.

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix proved to be a challenging event for Ferrari, culminating in a double retirement that left Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc facing significant repercussions. Hamilton, who started the race in thirteenth position, encountered substantial difficulties from the outset, resulting in a frustrating conclusion to his race.

As the race began, Hamilton’s determination to recover from his qualifying struggles was clear. However, early contact with Carlos Sainz’s car hindered his chances, foreshadowing a tough race. With Leclerc starting in a promising third position, expectations for a strong team performance were high, but the reality unfolded differently.

Initial chaos and Hamilton’s struggles

On the opening lap, Hamilton attempted to overtake Fernando Alonso but had to retreat at Turn 1 due to the chaotic conditions. This caution proved prudent as the ensuing turmoil led to Sainz colliding with Hamilton’s rear wheel, resulting in immediate instability. Hamilton reported that the car’s rear was unstable, signaling challenges ahead.

As the race continued, Hamilton’s difficulties became more evident. After a minor collision with Franco Colapinto’s Alpine, which resulted in damage to Colapinto’s front wing, Ferrari’s engineers confirmed via radio that Hamilton’s car had sustained damage to the floor. Despite competing valiantly for thirty-eight laps, Hamilton found it increasingly difficult to maintain control of his vehicle.

Downforce loss and eventual retirement

In discussing the performance of his car, Hamilton noted, “After the hit, it felt like the rear suspension was broken, but they said that it seemed to be alright.” However, he suspected that cross-weight issues were impacting the car’s downforce. Estimates indicated a loss of around thirty to forty points of downforce, leading to unpredictable handling, especially at high speeds. “The car was snapping, and I was pushing to keep pace with the leaders,” he added.

As his vehicle struggled for grip and control, Hamilton increasingly recognized the potential for an accident. He communicated his concerns to his race engineer, emphasizing that he felt on the verge of losing control. Ultimately, the team decided to retire the car after assessing the damage, marking a disappointing end to what had initially appeared to be a hopeful race.

Leclerc’s early exit compounds Ferrari’s woes

The challenges for Ferrari did not conclude with Hamilton’s retirement. Charles Leclerc, who started the race with promise, also faced difficulties due to an incident involving Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli. During the first lap, as the race resumed post-Safety Car, Piastri attempted to overtake Antonelli but ended up locking up, causing a chain reaction that forced Leclerc’s car off the track.

Leclerc expressed his frustration after the race, suggesting that Piastri should not bear sole responsibility for the collision. “There’s always a rulebook, and the stewards make their best attempts to apply it,” he remarked. “In this instance, it was a shared responsibility between Kimi and Oscar.” Leclerc had aimed for a podium finish following recent solid performances but was ultimately disappointed as he too was forced to retire.

Impact on Ferrari’s championship standing

With both drivers unable to finish the race, Ferrari’s position in the Constructors’ Championship suffered significantly. The team fell behind Mercedes by thirty-six points and now trails Red Bull by four points, raising concerns about their competitiveness with only three races remaining in the season. Hamilton conveyed his disappointment, stating, “It’s a weekend to forget. I love Brazil and the team, and it is devastating to come away with nothing.”

As the team reflects on this challenging event, both drivers remain hopeful of bouncing back in the next races. Hamilton concluded with determination, stating, “We’ll regroup and give it another go.” The upcoming races will be crucial for Ferrari as they strive to salvage their championship aspirations.
