The electric vehicle (EV) market in Italy has witnessed a dramatic shift in 2026. The Leapmotor T03 a compact electric city car, has surged to the top of the sales charts, surpassing long-time market leader Tesla. With 21,841 units registered in the first half of 2026, the T03 has established a significant lead over its competitors, marking a notable transformation in Italy’s EV landscape.
This shift underscores a broader trend: the arrival of new, primarily Asian, automakers is reshaping the EV market. These companies are driving down prices and accelerating the adoption of affordable urban electric models. The competitive landscape has evolved, with a few key players dominating the market.
The Rise of Leapmotor in Europe
Leapmotor a Chinese automaker, entered the European market in the autumn of 2026 through a partnership with Stellantis. The T03, their compact electric city car, quickly gained traction. In less than two years, the T03 has become the best-selling EV in Italy, outpacing established competitors.
The sales figures for the first half of 2026 highlight this shift. The Dacia Spring holds the second position with 5,300 units followed by the Tesla Model Y with 4,160 units the Citroen C3 with 4,055 units and the Tesla Model 3 with 3,698 units. This data illustrates the market’s polarization, with a few affordable city cars and some well-established models leading the way.
The Dacia Spring’s Decline
The Dacia Spring once a strong contender in the affordable EV segment, has seen a decline in sales. In the first half of 2026, it secured the second spot, but this represents a significant drop from its previous performance. A year earlier, in the first half of 2026, the Spring was in seventh place with 1,247 units while the Tesla Model 3 led the market. This rapid change underscores the dynamic nature of the EV market in Italy.
Competitive Pricing and Incentives
One of the key factors driving the T03’s success is its competitive pricing. The city car is priced at approximately €18,900 (with promotional offers bringing it down to €15,900), making it one of the most affordable EVs in Italy. When incentives were still available and could be combined with scrappage schemes, the T03’s price could drop to around €7,900.
For comparison, the Dacia Spring with a starting price of around €17,900 (promotional price of €15,650), could be had for approximately €6,900 with incentives. The BYD Dolphin Surf priced at €19,610 (promotional price of €17,960), was available for around €8,490 with incentives.
In the commercial sector, the T03 Van designed for work purposes, can still be purchased for as little as €5,900 thanks to promotional offers and tax incentives for light commercial vehicles.
