IndyCar has introduced a revamped driver qualification and licensing framework, set to take effect starting in 2027. This new system provides a structured pathway for drivers aspiring to compete in the IndyCar Series, offering clarity for team owners, managers, and prospective drivers alike.
The updated framework establishes clear advancement criteria from the Indy NXT by Firestone series while also setting formal standards for international competitors. This initiative aims to create a more objective and transparent process for evaluating driver readiness.
Indy NXT advancement pathway
To qualify for advancement from Indy NXT by Firestone drivers must complete a minimum of 12 race starts. Importantly, results achieved before reaching this threshold will be counted retroactively once the 12-race requirement is met.
The updated criteria outline three distinct status levels for drivers:
- Competitively Qualified Awarded to drivers who win the Indy NXT championship, finish in the top three, or secure at least two race wins within a 24-month period.
- Evaluation Eligible Granted to drivers with a single race victory, allowing them to participate in official IndyCar evaluation tests.
- Resume Review Required Applies to drivers who do not meet the above criteria, necessitating a comprehensive review of their racing background.
Both Competitively Qualified and Evaluation Eligible statuses remain valid for 24 months. However, obtaining a competition license is not automatic, as drivers must still meet IndyCar’s competency, safety, medical, and administrative requirements.
Evaluation criteria and international standards
Drivers deemed Evaluation Eligible will undergo a rigorous evaluation test assessing their pace, consistency, car control, racecraft, traffic management, procedural competence, and engineering communication. While passing this test does not guarantee a competition license, it is a crucial step in the qualification process.
For international drivers coming from series such as Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula E, Super Formula, IMSA GTP, NASCAR Cup, and WEC Hypercar the framework maintains a clear entry route. These drivers will either be approved directly based on their professional resumes or scheduled for further evaluation.
The qualification standards for oval competition remain unchanged, requiring an approved oval test prior to a race weekend unless explicitly waived by IndyCar. Existing Indianapolis 500 Rookie Orientation and Refresher Program requirements also stay in full effect.
The IndyCar Rulebook will be updated to formally incorporate these new driver qualification and licensing standards, ensuring all stakeholders are aware of the revised process.
