The world of Formula 1 is witnessing the rise of a new star as Leonardo Fornaroli prepares to make his debut in the high-octane arena of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The young Italian, a product of McLaren’s Driver Development Programmewill take the wheel of the MCL40 during Free Practice 1marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

Fornaroli’s debut is not just a personal achievement but also a fulfillment of the 2026 Formula 1 regulationswhich mandate that teams field a rookie driver in four Free Practice 1 sessions throughout the season. From Formula 2 Champion to F1 Reserve Driver

At just 21 years old, Fornaroli has already made a name for himself in the world of single-seater racing. He joined McLaren’s development program in, shortly after clinching the Formula 2 Championship. This victory came hot on the heels of his Formula 3 title the previous year, making him only the third driver to achieve back-to-back championships in these categories, alongside Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.

Since joining McLaren, Fornaroli has been diligently preparing for his role as a reserve driver. His extensive development program has included Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) running, simulator work, and trackside support. These experiences have been crucial in honing his skills and preparing him for the complexities of Formula 1.

The Road to Barcelona

Fornaroli’s journey to his F1 debut has been meticulously planned. He has already completed three tests in McLaren’s 2026 challenger, the MCL60. His TPC debut at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in March was followed by further runs at Silverstone and the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. These tests have provided him with a solid foundation of experience, preparing him for the challenges of contemporary Formula 1 machinery.

In his first official Formula 1 session, Fornaroli completed 22 laps, focusing on valuable rake work to collect data for the team. His primary objective was not to chase lap times but to execute the aero program and provide the team with crucial feedback. This data will be instrumental in optimizing the setup for McLaren’s regular drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

A Promising Future

The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is just the beginning for Fornaroli. He will continue to perform regular simulator work in Woking throughout the season, alongside further TPC running. His next test is scheduled for the Autodromo Nazionale Monza next week, where he will continue to develop his skills and gain more experience.

Fornaroli’s debut has been met with enthusiasm from the McLaren team. Senior Racing Director Randy Singh expressed optimism about the team’s performance in Barcelona, noting that the circuit’s characteristics and the hotter conditions seem to suit McLaren better. He emphasized the importance of managing tyre degradation effectively and sustaining good, consistent pace throughout the stints.
