Median Fire Destroys L&L Classic Auto in Wendell, Idaho

The American West’s expansive landscapes and dry climate have long made it an ideal location for storing and preserving classic cars. However, this week, car enthusiasts were reminded of another significant threat to these vast collections: wildfires.

The Median Fire’s Impact on L&L Classic Auto

The fire, which began approximately four miles northwest of Wendell at 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, quickly spread eastward, crossing State Highway 46 and reaching the salvage yard. The Bureau of Land Management reported that the fire had burned 8,600 acres of grass and brush. By late Wednesday, officials stated that the fire’s forward progress had been halted.

David Freiburgera frequent visitor to L&L for video shoots, posted on Facebook that the fire had reached the collection of vintage cars. He cited reports from sources on the ground and later updated that “all the people are okay” but “the junkyard took a big hit.” Photos accompanying his post showed burning cars and thick smoke enveloping the salvage yard, indicating severe damage.

A Treasure Trove of Vintage Automobiles

The salvage yard housed a diverse array of vehicles, including ’60s classicsdecommissioned work vehicles with unique hand-painted lettering, and rare finds like a 1972 AMC Matador fastbackan International slant-four engineand a Checker Aerobus. These vehicles not only served as a resource for parts but also offered a glimpse into automotive history.

During a visit in early 2026, Freiburger documented the variety and richness of the collection. The loss of these vehicles is a significant blow to both car enthusiasts and the broader automotive community. While the full extent of the damage remains unclear until the fire is completely extinguished, the initial reports and images suggest substantial losses.

The Magic Valley region, where Wendell is located, is known for its scenic beauty and rich history. The destruction of the salvage yard is a stark reminder of the power of wildfires and their potential to impact even the most remote and seemingly secure locations.

As the community comes to terms with the loss, the focus will be on assessing the damage and determining what can be salvaged from the ashes. The story of L&L Classic Auto serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of our historical treasures and the importance of preserving them for future generations.
