The New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) is poised to revolutionize the racing scene with the introduction of its new track layout, known as Devil’s Pass. This configuration is slated for the 2026 season and promises to enhance the existing Thunderbolt Classic circuit by improving both speed and flow for competitors.
As part of NJMP’s dedication to upgrading its infrastructure, the Devil’s Pass aims to present drivers with a new challenge. This section will integrate smoothly with the Thunderbolt circuit, offering a varied racing experience that accommodates a range of skill levels.
Understanding the Devil’s Pass configuration
The Devil’s Pass retains the traditional layout of the Thunderbolt circuit at Turn 7, where racers navigate a sweeping right-hand bend. In contrast to the Thunderbolt Classic, which features a tight and technical section at Turns 9 and 10—known as The Devil—the new configuration propels drivers into an extended straightaway. This straight leads into a sharp 90-degree left turn, reconnecting with the original circuit in the middle of the Esses.
New opportunities for competitive racing
Brad Scott, President and COO of NJMP, stated that this configuration introduces a new braking zone and opportunities for overtaking, enhancing the competitive dynamics of the track. “This will create a challenging flow for drivers, where mastering the transition from the sweeping right to the subsequent straight is crucial for gaining speed down the front straight,” he explained.
Professional racer Alex Sedgwick supported Scott’s observations, noting that the new layout will challenge drivers in unexpected ways. He stated, “It opens the door for new overtaking opportunities during races and will elevate the average lap speeds, demanding a different approach from both the car and the driver compared to the previous slower sections of the track.” Sedgwick, who secured second place in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America championship, highlighted the necessity of adapting to this evolving racing environment.
The impact of the Devil’s Pass on NJMP
This development signifies the second phase of NJMP’s multi-year investment in the Thunderbolt circuit. The initial phase, which involved extensive repaving and renovations, garnered positive feedback during the season, with numerous track records broken across various racing disciplines.
Looking ahead to future enhancements
RJ Valentine, Managing Director of New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) and a seasoned racer, emphasizes the importance of enhancing track flow. “Both Lee (Brahin, fellow Managing Director) and I believe in the significance of maintaining a good flow at the track. This new configuration is sure to create an engaging racing experience with more passing zones,” he stated.
Starting with the 2026 racing season, NJMP will feature both the Thunderbolt Classic and Devil’s Pass layouts, providing a total of four distinct configurations, which include the option to utilize the Turn 3 chicane. This variety aims to attract additional professional racing series to the park, ensuring a thrilling experience for all participants.
