The automotive world has witnessed countless engine swap projects, but few have captured the spirit of determination quite like Tom Gorelik’s Porsche 944 endeavor. The Drive video producer embarked on a mission to breathe new life into his classic Porsche by integrating a Honda K-series engine a favorite among tuning enthusiasts. What seemed like a straightforward project quickly evolved into a year-long odyssey, filled with challenges and triumphs.
In the realm of DIY engine swaps, time can feel like it stands still. For Gorelik, this sentiment rang true as he navigated the complexities of integrating a K24 engine into his Porsche 944. The journey was fraught with obstacles, but the recent achievement of getting the car to run under its own power marks a significant milestone.
The Road to Success: Overcoming Challenges
The project’s path to success was anything but smooth. After initial attempts to diagnose and resolve issues on his own, Gorelik recognized the need for expert intervention. The folks at Fulltime Fabrication stepped in to assist, uncovering several critical problems, including bent valves and other mechanical concerns. Virtually every component, from the engine to the gearbox and hydraulics, required attention before the 944 could move.
Gorelik’s DIY approach, while commendable, led to several challenges that required professional expertise to resolve. Kevin Maecha from Fulltime Fabrication expressed admiration for Gorelik’s perseverance, stating, “What he did, in the back of a shop, in the ****ing cold weather, on the ground? I respect that.” Maecha further acknowledged the complexity of the task, adding, “You cannot pay me enough to do that **** on the ground.” Despite the hurdles, Maecha praised Gorelik’s efforts, noting, “For a DIY guy, he got it there.”
Performance and Future Plans
With the car now running, Gorelik turned his attention to tuning. The turbocharged K24 engine has already demonstrated impressive performance, pushing nearly 300 horsepower at the wheels. While it may not match the instant torque of an LS swap the engine’s unique characteristics and distinctive noises have made it a standout feature.
Gorelik acknowledges that the car is far from perfect, but the fact that it now functions has motivated him to continue improving it. He is currently on the lookout for a fresh body, aiming to replicate the project with a better outcome. This time around, he plans to have a garage from the start, ensuring a more controlled and comfortable environment for the work ahead.
The journey of Tom Gorelik’s Porsche 944 K-swap project serves as a testament to the power of determination and the spirit of DIY innovation. As the project continues to evolve, it inspires enthusiasts and highlights the rewards of perseverance in the face of adversity.
