Rivian Discontinues Cheapest R1S and R1T Variants

Rivian, the innovative electric vehicle manufacturer, has made a significant shift in its lineup. The company has discontinued the Dual Standard variants of its R1S SUV and R1T pickup marking a strategic move as it ramps up deliveries of the new R2 crossover.

This change reflects Rivian’s commitment to refining its product offerings and catering to a broader market. The discontinuation of the Dual Standard models, which featured smaller batteries and less range, paves the way for the introduction of more accessible and versatile options.

R1S and R1T Dual Standard Models Discontinued

The Dual Standard variants of the R1S and R1T were the most affordable options in Rivian’s lineup. The R1S Dual Standard was priced at $76,990 while the R1T Dual Standard cost $72,990. These models offered an EPA-estimated range of 270 miles which could be extended to 329 miles with the Large battery pack.

Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe had previously indicated that very few customers opted for the entry-level trims. The discontinuation of these models aligns with the company’s strategy to streamline its lineup and focus on more popular configurations. The new base models, the R1S Dual and R1T Dual, now start at $83,990 and $79,990 respectively.

The Rise of the R2 Crossover

As Rivian phases out the Dual Standard models, it is introducing the R2 crossover a more accessible and mass-market-friendly vehicle. The first version available, the R2 Performance with Launch Package, is priced at $57,990. This model represents Rivian’s foray into the competitive crossover segment, offering a blend of performance and affordability.

Looking ahead, Rivian plans to introduce an even more affordable version of the R2, priced at $45,000 in the coming year. This move is part of Rivian’s broader strategy to expand its customer base and compete more effectively in the electric vehicle market.

What This Means for Rivian’s Future

The discontinuation of the Dual Standard models and the introduction of the R2 signify a pivotal moment for Rivian. By focusing on more popular and accessible models, the company aims to attract a wider range of customers and strengthen its position in the electric vehicle market.

Rivian’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction is evident in its strategic decisions. As the company continues to refine its lineup and introduce new models, it is poised to make a significant impact on the future of electric transportation.
