Tyler Reddick Drops to Second in NASCAR Cup Standings After Sonoma Race

The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season has taken an unexpected turn. After securing victories in the first three races and maintaining the championship lead through 17 rounds, Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing has encountered a significant setback. A power steering issue during the race at sonoma raceway left Reddick with a last-place finish, allowing Denny Hamlin to take the lead in the standings by just one point.

The shift in the championship landscape was not solely due to Reddick’s misfortune. Hamlin, driving the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, had his own share of challenges. Despite having a car capable of a top-five finish, Hamlin’s race took a turn for the worse during a late-race restart. A collision while running seventh sent him to the rear of the field, and damage to his splitter further hindered his progress.

Reddick’s Mechanical Woes and Hamlin’s Narrow Escape

Reddick’s day at Sonoma was marred by a power steering issue that left him six laps down. The team worked diligently to diagnose and fix the problem, but the damage was already done. Despite the setback, Reddick managed to secure the fastest lap bonus, earning two crucial points. “We were trying to diagnose it, and it was just a very odd issue,” Reddick remarked, highlighting the unpredictability of the mechanical failure.

Hamlin, on the other hand, found himself in a precarious position after a late-race incident. “I had a really fast car, top five car on speed,” Hamlin stated, reflecting on his car’s potential. However, a spin and subsequent damage to his splitter left him struggling to regain lost ground. “Lost a lot of downforce, and struggled to run where we were at,” he added, underscoring the impact of the incident on his race.

The Championship Battle Heats Up

Despite the challenges, both drivers remained focused on the bigger picture. Reddick, ever the optimist, looked at the positives. “I’d say we got pretty fortunate today,” he said, acknowledging Hamlin’s struggles. “It is what it is, we’ll take it and move on. And we’ll do everything we can at Chicagoland to get back the lead.”

The race at Sonoma also saw notable performances from other drivers. Ty Gibbs secured the pole position with a lap of 1:14.829, while Shane van Gisbergen impressed with a sixth-place start. Bubba Wallace however, had a tough day after crashing during qualifying, leaving him with front-end damage and a likely move to the rear of the field for the race.

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway was broadcast nationally on TNT, with additional streaming options available on HBO MAX and. The race highlighted the unpredictable nature of the sport, where mechanical issues and late-race incidents can dramatically alter the championship landscape.
