The open roads of the Midwest became the stage for a dramatic high-speed chase that captivated authorities and left many questioning the driver’s motives. What began as a routine traffic stop for an expired registration tag escalated into a 156 mph pursuit across two states, culminating in a crash and a brief foot chase through a Missouri field.
The incident, which unfolded on the morning of June 15, started when an Arkansas State Police trooper noticed a red Chevrolet Corvette with an obscured license plate cover. A quick check revealed that the vehicle’s registration had expired several months prior. What should have been a straightforward stop turned into a high-speed drama that spanned Interstate 55 and crossed state lines.
The chase that defied expectations
When Trooper Arellano activated his emergency lights near the 55-mile marker in Mississippi County, Arkansas, the Corvette showed no intention of stopping. Instead, it accelerated, reaching speeds that would ultimately top out at 156 mph (251 km/h). The pursuit continued into Missouri, where troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol had strategically placed stop sticks in an attempt to halt the fleeing vehicle.
The Corvette driver managed to avoid the stop sticks with the left-side tires but continued on for several more miles before abruptly braking. The sudden stop caused the pursuing Arkansas State Police trooper to lose control and rear-end the Corvette. “I went for a TVI, my brakes got real hot, so I just ended up rear-ending him,” the officer reported. The collision disabled both vehicles, bringing the chase to a dramatic halt.
A surprising turn of events
After the crash, the driver exited the Corvette carrying a backpack and attempted to flee on foot before surrendering in a nearby field. Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jayden Atreeyian Smith of West Point, Mississippi. A search of the backpack revealed two Ram TRX key fobs, one Dodge SRT key fob, and Smith’s driver’s license. Additionally, a subsequent search of the Corvette uncovered 0.12 grams of suspected marijuana.
What surprised authorities the most was Smith’s nonchalant attitude following the chase. While being placed into a patrol vehicle, he reportedly remarked that he wasn’t concerned about the sports car because he would “simply buy another one.” This comment added an intriguing layer to the already high-profile incident.
The aftermath and charges
Smith was ultimately booked on a series of charges that included felony fleeing in a vehicle creating a substantial danger of deathfelony fleeing on foot resulting in injuryreckless drivingpossession of a controlled substanceno liability insuranceexpired registration and improper display of tags among other traffic-related offenses. The incident has left many wondering about the motivations behind the high-speed chase and the driver’s seemingly indifferent attitude towards the consequences.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of high-speed pursuits and the unpredictable nature of such incidents. As authorities continue to investigate the details, the story of the 156 mph Corvette chase remains a fascinating tale of speed, evasion, and the unexpected turns that can arise on the open road.
