Bugatti's Porcelain-Embellished Mistral Hypercar: A Unique Collaboration with KPM

The automotive world has witnessed yet another extraordinary creation from Bugatti, the Mistral Blanc Éternel. This hypercar is not just a marvel of engineering but also a testament to the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The collaboration between Bugatti and the renowned Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM) has resulted in a vehicle that is as much a work of art as it is a high-performance machine.

The Mistral Blanc Éternel is the latest masterpiece from Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division, which specializes in customization. This particular model is one of only 99 Mistral units produced, making it a rare and exclusive piece. The hypercar boasts a 1,578 hp engine, capable of reaching a top speed of 273 mph and accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.4 seconds.

The Art of Porcelain in Automotive Design

The use of porcelain in automotive design is an unusual yet innovative approach. Bugatti first experimented with this idea in 2011 with the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse L’Or Blanc inspired by a porcelain vase designed by Enzo Mari for KPM. The Mistral Blanc Éternel takes this concept further, incorporating porcelain inlays on the engine cover, oil cap, gas cap, and EB badges.

The porcelain components were meticulously crafted by KPM, accounting for a 17 percent shrinkage during the firing process. This precision ensures that each piece fits perfectly, showcasing the craftsmanship involved. The porcelain accents are not limited to the exterior; they also adorn the interior, including the shift lever, speaker cover plates, center console armrest, kneepads, and window switches.

Digital Design Meets Traditional Craftsmanship

The Mistral Blanc Éternel’s design is a harmonious blend of digital innovation and traditional artistry. Bugatti’s design director, Frank Heyl, and his team utilized a digital solution to create the hypercar’s styling, manipulating a network of precisely controlled surfaces to reveal the normally invisible patch layout. This digital design is brought to life with hand-applied black lines that trace the Mistral’s underlying NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) digital surface layout.

The black line motif continues into the cabin, where each leather section is meticulously masked by hand before the graphics are painted directly onto the surface. This process ensures that the intricate design is seamlessly integrated into the interior, creating a cohesive aesthetic experience.

A Celebration of Craftsmanship and Innovation

The collaboration between Bugatti and KPM is a celebration of craftsmanship and innovation. The Mistral Blanc Éternel is not just a hypercar; it is a symbol of the intersection of boundary-breaking engineering and artisanship. This collaboration is a nod to Bugatti’s founder, Ettore Bugatti, who was known for his experimentation with new materials and designs.

To commemorate this partnership, Bugatti and KPM have released a limited-edition porcelain collection, including the To-Drive Cup and KPM’s Aviator Cup in two sizes. This collection is limited to 1,000 handmade pieces further emphasizing the exclusivity and craftsmanship involved in this collaboration.

The Mistral Blanc Éternel is a testament to Bugatti’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and engineering. It is a hypercar that not only performs exceptionally but also stands as a work of art, showcasing the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
