The upcoming 2027 MotoGP season will feature a fresh face on the Tech3 KTM line-up: Australian Moto2 contender Senna Agius. After a prolonged duel with his current teammate Manu Gonzalez the Australian secured the vacancy that completes the grid for next year.
Tech3’s principal, Guenther Steiner has explained that the final seat—joining already-signed Luca Marini—was earmarked for either Agius or Gonzalez. The team opted to wait until the middle of the season to gauge performance before committing, allowing the decision to be based on concrete form rather than speculation.
Why Tech3 chose Agius over Gonzalez
Unlike most riders who progress through the traditional Moto3 ladder, Agius took the less common route of the European Moto2 championship. He currently sits fourth in the Moto2 standings, displaying a blend of raw speed and composure that impressed Steiner. “We believe Senna has the qualities to make a very strong step into MotoGP,” the former Haas F1 team boss said, highlighting the rider’s determination and work ethic.
Statistically, Gonzalez holds an edge with five race wins this year compared to Agius’s two, and he leads the championship. Yet Tech3 emphasized potential and long-term development. Agius’s consistency, coupled with his willingness to improve, aligned with the team’s strategy of pairing seasoned campaigners with youthful talent for a new MotoGP era.
Strategic implications beyond Tech3
The signing also ties into MotoGP’s broader plan to move the Australian round from Phillip Island to a newly proposed Adelaide parklands circuit. Having a home-grown rider on the grid is seen as a marketing advantage, potentially boosting local interest and sponsorship.
However, the decision sparked debate within the paddock because it effectively blocks Gonzalez from graduating to the premier class, regardless of whether he clinches the Moto2 title. Only five riders will remain with their current teams in 2027, or six if Moreira stays at LCR.
