In a groundbreaking move for the robotics industry, Chinese company Unitree has set the stage for its initial public offering (IPO) on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Priced at 150.8 yuan per share, the IPO aims to raise a substantial 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million), positioning Unitree as the first mainland-listed humanoid robot manufacturer. This development comes as several Chinese robotics companies are racing to go public, driven by the potential of humanoid robots and the need for substantial capital investment.

The company, founded in 2016 by engineer Wang Xingxing, has gained global recognition for its innovative and affordable quadruped robots, often referred to as robot dogs. Unitree’s humanoid models, including the G1, H1, and R1, have captivated audiences worldwide with their ability to run, dance, and perform martial arts. These advancements place Unitree in direct competition with industry giants like Tesla and Boston Dynamics, as well as a growing number of Chinese startups.

Unitree’s Remarkable Growth and Global Reach

Unitree’s revenue has seen a remarkable fourfold increase, reaching nearly 1.7 billion yuan in 2026. Unlike many of its counterparts, Unitree has achieved profitability, reporting an adjusted net profit of approximately 600 million yuan. The company’s international presence is also noteworthy, with overseas revenue accounting for more than 40% of its total sales during the reporting periods disclosed in its prospectus.

The Significance of Unitree in China’s Robotics Landscape

Unitree’s success underscores China’s capability to produce sophisticated robots at competitive prices. The company leverages China’s extensive supply chains for motors, sensors, batteries, and other essential components. This achievement is a testament to Beijing’s ambition to dominate the field of embodied intelligence which combines artificial intelligence models with machines capable of navigating and interacting with the physical world.

However, despite these advancements, the commercial success of humanoid robots in replacing workers remains uncertain. Current demand primarily stems from universities and government-backed projects focused on education, research, and demonstrations. Humanoid robots still face challenges related to reliability, dexterity, and the ability to perform varied tasks for extended periods without human intervention.

The Rush to Public Listings in the Humanoid Robot Sector

Developing humanoid robots requires significant investment in engineers, robot-training data, AI models, and manufacturing capacity. This investment is necessary years before demand from factories or households becomes a reality. Public markets offer these companies the capital needed to continue developing their technology, especially while government support and investor interest remain strong.

Following Unitree’s lead, other Chinese robotics companies are also preparing for their public debuts. Leju Robotics, known for its Kuavo humanoid, filed an application in May to list on Shenzhen’s ChiNext market. Similarly, Shanghai-based AgiBot, another leading humanoid producer, began preparations for a Hong Kong IPO in July. This trend reflects the growing investor interest in the development of robotics and China’s ambition to strengthen its position in the field of embodied intelligence.
