Unlike its competitors, the 2025 Ram 2500 Power Wagon does not currently offer a turbodiesel engine option, making the Rebel the alternative. The Power Wagon is powered by a robust 6.4-liter V-8 engine that delivers 405 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Although this powertrain performs adequately, it lacks the refinement and output of Ford’s 7.3-liter Godzilla V-8.

Engine options and performance enhancements

The Rebel HD primarily features the gas V-8 engine, but the standout option is the costly $12,595 6.7-liter Cummins inline-6 turbodiesel. Producing 430 horsepower, it is the impressive 1,075 lb-ft of torque that appeals to those seeking utility in their trucks. This torque rating exceeds Chevy’s 975 lb-ft but falls short of Ford’s remarkable 1,200 lb-ft. For 2025, the Cummins engine has been significantly upgraded, now featuring a new turbocharger, improved intake manifold, and an advanced 8-speed automatic transmission.

These enhancements lead to quicker acceleration, enabling the Ram to go from 0-60 mph in just 6.9 seconds, a marked improvement from the previous model’s 8.0 seconds. Additionally, the upgrades contribute to faster cold starts and easier maintenance. The 8-speed automatic transmission offers smooth and responsive shifts, proving slightly more efficient than Ford’s 10-speed when towing.

2025 Ram 2500 Rebel HD: Rising to the occasion

While the Power Wagon currently lacks a turbodiesel option, future developments may be on the horizon. Doug Killian, Chief Engineer for Ram Heavy Duty, confirmed the demand from Power Wagon buyers for a turbodiesel engine. However, he noted that engineering challenges related to the oil pan and front suspension compatibility are hindering this option.

Suspension and ride quality

The Power Wagon and Rebel HD exhibit distinct ride characteristics. The Power Wagon’s suspension, equipped with soft Bilstein off-road shocks, provides a surprisingly smooth ride across various terrains. Conversely, the Rebel HD offers a firmer experience due to its suspension tuning, which prioritizes towing and hauling. The Rebel can tow up to 17,130 pounds and carry a payload of 3,320 pounds with the gas engine, while these figures increase to 19,890 pounds for towing and decrease to 2,450 pounds with the turbodiesel.

In comparison, the Power Wagon’s towing capacity is limited to 10,530 pounds, with a payload capacity of 1,570 pounds. This limitation allows the Power Wagon to maintain its superior ride quality, particularly on rough off-road terrain. Testing in the Nevada desert highlighted the strengths of both trucks: the Power Wagon displayed better traction on uneven surfaces, while the Rebel faced challenges due to its lack of an electronic front sway bar disconnect.

Design updates and interior features

The 2025 Ram lineup has undergone several visual updates. The front end now boasts redesigned headlights and grilles, presenting a more imposing look. Although the new arrangement makes the headlights appear taller, the overall aesthetic may not appeal to everyone. The rear end features streamlined taillights that align with the updated design seen in the 2025 Ram 1500.

Inside the cabin, familiarity remains a key feature. The Ram HD’s interior reflects a premium feel, with a standard 12.0-inch touchscreen now offering an optional 14.5-inch upgrade. This larger screen includes digital buttons that some may find unnecessary. Additionally, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is available, which incorporates a turboboost gauge for the turbodiesel variant of the Rebel.
