Available in both SL 320 and SL 500 variants, this edition featured a distinctive Argento Brillante Metallizzato paint scheme, polished six-spoke Evo II alloy wheels, and a striking checkered flag graphic adorning the side air intakes. Out of the 630 units produced, only 40 were equipped with right-hand drive, making them particularly rare.
Anniversary Celebrations
The 40th Anniversary Edition released in 1997, was primarily targeted at the American market. This edition came in two variants: the SL500 and the SL320. The SL500 featured a Rosso Designo exterior with a black soft top and beige leather interiors, accented by chestnut wood inserts. The SL320, on the other hand, sported a Blu Designo body with gray leather interiors and a navy blue soft top. Both models included special anniversary floor mats and unique six-spoke Evo II alloy wheels. Notably, the SL320 was the rarer of the two, with only 250 units produced compared to the 500 units of the SL500.
Another notable anniversary edition was the La Costa Edition produced in 1997 to commemorate Mercedes-Benz’s sponsorship of the PGA Mercedes Championships at the La Costa Resort in California. This rare edition, limited to just 30 units, featured an exclusive Verde Calypso Metallizzato paint scheme with bicolour interiors that matched the exterior color with black accents. The car also included AMG styling packages, 18-inch AMG Monoblock alloy wheels, and special La Costa badges. The Final Edition produced between 2000 and 2001, marked one of the last special editions of the R129 generation. The exterior featured a Silver Arrow Metallic paint scheme with a black soft top and silver stitching. The interior boasted black and silver Nappa leather, black acer wood inserts, and a sporty aluminum pedal set. Distinctive Silver Arrow badges adorned the glove box, illuminated door sills, and front fenders.
The Mille Miglia Edition of 2003 marked a return to the legendary race that had inspired previous special editions. This edition, limited to just 12 units, featured a Silver Arrow metallic paint scheme, matte aluminum side moldings, and Mille Miglia badges on the front fenders and trunk. The interior paid homage to the original SL with red leather seats and a laser-engraved Mille Miglia route on the headrests. The roof lining was made of soft Alcantara, and the center console and door panels were adorned with matte aluminum inserts.
