F1 Africa Grand Prix: Stefano Domenicali Confirms Negotiations Progress

The Formula 1 World Championship is poised to make a historic return to the African continent after an absence of over three decades. The last African grand prix was held in 1993 at the Kyalami circuit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since then, Africa has been the only continent without a race on the F1 calendar.

Stefano Domenicali, the President and CEO of Formula 1 has confirmed that negotiations are underway with several African countries to bring the F1 Circus back to the continent. This move aligns with the sport’s global expansion strategy and fulfills a long-standing promise to Lewis Hamilton the seven-time world champion with African roots.

Potential Host Countries and Global Expansion

Domenicali has expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, stating, “I believe I can say that the negotiations in Africa are progressing very well.” The primary candidate for hosting the return race is South Africa with the Kyalami circuit being the most likely venue. However, other African nations are also in the running, including Morocco which hosted a single race in 1958 and Rwanda which would make its debut on the F1 calendar.

Looking beyond Africa, Domenicali has revealed that discussions are also taking place with countries in South America and the Far East. He mentioned that there are requests for a second race in China and Japan but the current focus is on consolidating the existing market before expanding further. “We want to remain with one race in China for now because we need to further consolidate the market before considering other options there” Domenicali explained.

The Significance of a Return to Africa

The return of the Formula 1 to Africa holds immense significance for the sport. It would mark a major milestone in the championship’s global expansion and fulfill a personal ambition for Lewis Hamilton who has expressed his desire to compete in an African Grand Prix before retiring. The last African race in 1993 was won by Alain Prost with Ayrton Senna and Mark Blundell completing the podium.

Bringing the F1 Circus back to Africa would not only tap into the continent’s rich motorsport history but also open up new markets and fan bases. It would be a testament to the sport’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, resonating with fans worldwide. As the negotiations progress, the anticipation for an African Grand Prix continues to build, promising an exciting new chapter in the history of Formula 1.
