FIA to showcase at Rétromobile classic car exhibition

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the leading authority in global motorsport and mobility organizations, has announced its participation in the upcoming Rétromobile classic car exhibition. This renowned event will take place from January 28 to February 1, 2026, in Paris, drawing enthusiasts eager to celebrate the beauty and historical significance of vintage automobiles.

Celebrating automotive milestones

The FIA’s exhibit will feature a remarkable collection of vehicles, each symbolizing the FIA’s pivotal role in sports, mobility, and automotive heritage. Among the highlights are:

The Oméga-Six 1928

One of the crown jewels of the collection is the Oméga-Six 1928, a rare model believed to be the last of its kind. This vehicle marks a significant chapter in the evolution of mobility, with a fascinating connection to motorsport. It was famously driven by Hellé Nice, the ‘fastest woman in the world,’ who secured victory at the Grand Prix Féminin at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry in 1929.

The Lancia Stratos

Another iconic vehicle on display will be the Lancia Stratos, a champion that dominated the World Rally Championships from 1974 to 1976. This car not only reflects excellence in motorsport but also stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of rally racing.

The Mercedes CLK-LM 1998

The exhibit will also feature the Mercedes CLK-LM 1998, a formidable competitor that won every championship event during the 1998 FIA GT season. With recent updates to Appendix K, this vehicle can once again participate in competitive events, showcasing the FIA’s commitment to preserving racing history.

Insights into motorsport evolution

The FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the organization’s commitment to safeguarding the rich heritage of motorsport and mobility. He remarked, “For over 120 years, the FIA has played a crucial role in shaping motorsport and mobility worldwide. It is imperative for us to maintain our shared heritage, which is vital for road users and automotive enthusiasts alike.”

At the upcoming Rétromobile event, FIA experts will be available to discuss the recent modifications to the International Sporting Code, particularly the updates to Appendix K. These changes now permit vehicles manufactured between 1991 and 2000 to compete in International Historic events. This adjustment significantly expands the range of cars eligible for a Historic Technical Passport, allowing more participants to engage in these historic competitions.

Expanding historical motorsport competitions

The rising enthusiasm for historic motorsport has prompted a significant expansion of events organized under the FIA umbrella. Beginning in 2026, historic rallying will feature three distinct FIA European Historic Rally Championships, showcasing 16 iconic rallies across Europe. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the FIA European Historic Hill Climb Championship, which is nearing its 96th anniversary and continues to be a cornerstone of historic motorsport.

Additionally, attendees will have the chance to explore the FIA’s Historic Championships. They can familiarize themselves with eligibility criteria and technical regulations that govern international competitions, fostering greater engagement in the sport.

Preserving automotive history

The FIA’s International Historical Commission (CHI) plays a pivotal role in the preservation of automotive heritage. This organization collaborates with the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens to promote the visibility of historic vehicles on our roads and within our culture.

In a recent initiative, the CHI has strengthened its partnerships with six European museums. They have developed a dedicated online platform to consolidate resources and information, aiming to enhance the transmission of automotive heritage. This includes the establishment of a Youth Working Group, designed to engage younger generations in the appreciation of automotive history.

Additionally, a selection of original archived documents will be showcased at the FIA stand. This display offers attendees a unique opportunity to gain insight into the organization’s historical leadership and its significant influence on the evolution of motorsport and mobility.

On January 28 at 3 PM, the FIA Founding Members’ Club will announce the winner of the prestigious Heritage Cup. This event will coincide with the FIA’s Historic Awards, which will recognize the champions of historic motorsport from 2026. These initiatives reflect the FIA’s commitment to honoring automotive history while simultaneously paving the way for the future of motorsport.
