General Motors is taking a bold step into the future of automotive technology with the development of a new in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant. This assistant is designed to surpass the capabilities of Google’s Gemini, which was integrated into GM vehicles earlier this year. The new AI system aims to provide a more personalized and intuitive driving experience by deeply understanding both the vehicle and the driver’s needs.
In an interview with CNBC, Anna Santos, GM’s director of product management for voice and AI/machine learning, highlighted the unique advantages of the new AI assistant. She emphasized that the system will be deeply integrated with GM vehicle knowledge and OnStar intelligence, enabling it to offer capabilities beyond those of a general-purpose assistant.

This advanced system will leverage predictive maintenance and live vehicle telemetry data to anticipate and address drivers’ requirements proactively. Currently, GM’s infotainment system runs on Google-provided Android Automotive, with Gemini AI being added to millions of 2026 model year and newer vehicles this year. While Gemini offers features like climate control and radio adjustments, it lacks specific knowledge about GM models. The new AI assistant aims to fill this gap by being trained to understand the intricacies of GM vehicles.

David Richardson, vice president of software and services engineering at GM, shared his vision for the new AI assistant. He stated that it will anticipate your needs, offer timely help, and make every journey more personable and more enjoyable. However, neither Santos nor Richardson provided a specific timeline for the system’s readiness. Once developed, the AI assistant will undergo extensive testing across GM’s entire product range before being introduced to the market.
