The legendary Jeep 4.0-liter inline-six has long been celebrated for its durability, low-end torque and unpretentious power delivery. Produced from 1987 to 2006 the engine powered everything from the humble XJ Cherokee to the robust Wrangler, earning a reputation as a “down-and-dirty truck engine” that could endure harsh off-road abuse. While its stock output hovered around 190 hp, tuners have shown that the robust architecture can tolerate far more power when treated carefully. Recent developments have taken the conversation beyond forced induction, demonstrating that sheer displacement and meticulous building can unlock performance that rivals, and sometimes surpasses, contemporary turbocharged units.

Enter Newcomer Racing a performance shop based in North Carolina and headed by Keith Newcomer. Known for an earlier record-breaking Jeep six-cylinder that topped 1,000 hp with turbocharging and carburetion, the shop set out to prove that the block could be pushed considerably without any forced induction. The result is a 5.0-liter version of the original 4.0-liter engine that produces a solid 434 horsepower—a figure 14 hp higher than the standard-output Hurricane inline-six currently found in the Grand Wagoneer, and more than double the power of a fresh-out-of-the-box XJ Cherokee.

The heritage of Jeep’s 4.0-liter inline-six

During its nearly two-decade production run, the Jeep 4.0 L engine became synonymous with reliability. Its cast-iron block, robust crankshaft, and modest overhead-valve head were deliberately designed for durability rather than outright speed. This engineering philosophy earned the engine the nickname “down-and-dirty truck engine,” a term popularized by industry observers who valued its grunt over gleaming horsepower numbers. The last high-performance Jeep that bore a factory-installed powerhouse was the WK Grand Cherokee SRT8, introduced in 2006 with a Hemi V8, just as the era of the inline-six was drawing to a close.

Newcomer Racing’s 5.0-liter over-bore project

To meet a client’s request for a “mud-drag” capable 1996 Cherokee, Newcomer Racing first increased the cylinder bore and stroke, expanding the total displacement from 4.0 L to a full 5.0 L. The rebuilt engine operates at a high 13:1 compression ratio a figure that boosts thermal efficiency while still maintaining safe margins for a naturally aspirated design. Initially, the powerplant ran on a carburetor with a custom intake, but the shop later swapped to modern electronic fuel injection (EFI) to improve throttle response and fuel metering. Throughout the build, the team retained the vehicle’s original wiring harness, stripping away only non-essential circuits, which shaved a few pounds and kept the electrical system familiar for the owner.

The dual-setup testing—carbureted versus EFI—revealed nearly identical peak outputs, confirming that the core mechanical upgrades, rather than the fueling method, were responsible for the dramatic power jump. Both configurations delivered more than twice the 190 hp that a stock 4.0 L unit produced when new, solidifying the notion that the block’s architecture can support substantial power gains without resorting to turbos or superchargers. The engine’s broad torque curve, paired with a generous power band, satisfies the client’s desire for sustained wheel speed while tackling deep mud and large, aggressive tires.

Why 434 hp matters in an era of forced induction

Achieving 434 hp from a naturally aspirated Jeep inline-six is noteworthy because most contemporary performance upgrades rely on forced induction to reach similar numbers. By focusing on displacement, compression, and internal reinforcement, Newcomer Racing demonstrated that the engine’s fundamental design possesses latent capability often overlooked by enthusiasts. The result not only eclipses the output of the current Hurricane twin-turbo unit in certain configurations, but it also does so with fewer components, lower complexity, and a potentially more reliable setup for off-road applications where turbo lag or heat soak could be problematic.

Beyond raw numbers, this build underscores a broader principle for the Jeep community: a well-engineered, robust block can serve as an excellent foundation for high-performance projects, even when the original intent was durability over speed. The 5.0-liter, 434-hp engine provides a compelling option for drivers who crave both the legendary Jeep grunt and the ability to dominate demanding terrain without the added weight and maintenance of forced-induction systems.
