MRA kicks off 2025 season at High Plains Raceway with thrilling races

Experience the excitement of the MRA's 2025 season opener with thrilling races and dramatic rivalries at High Plains Raceway.

Under a sunlit Colorado sky, the Motorcycle Roadracing Association (MRA) kicked off its 2025 championship season at High Plains Raceway, showcasing not just skill, but an undeniable camaraderie among racers. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as fans gathered to witness a day filled with adrenaline-fueled competition. As the engines roared to life, it became clear that this season would be marked by fierce rivalries and breathtaking performances, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable year in motorcycle racing.

Race of the Rockies: Hendry’s impressive defense of the title

The Race of the Rockies saw a surprising turn of events during the qualifying rounds. James Wilkerson (#98) stunned the crowd with a blistering lap time of 1:48.317, claiming pole position ahead of defending champion Brad Hendry (#1) and Justen Behmer (#4). But when the lights turned green, it was Hendry who surged ahead right from the start. Launching his BMW with precision, he quickly darted past Behmer as they approached Turn 1, with Wilkerson hot on their heels. The trio set a blistering pace, but Behmer faced unexpected challenges due to a sprocket issue that began to hinder his performance.

By the fifth lap of the 12-lap race, the pressure mounted. Former Pro Superbike racer Mathew Cunha (#95) capitalized on Behmer’s struggles, showcasing his experience and skill by overtaking him and claiming third position. Yet, it was Hendry who displayed remarkable composure and racecraft, effortlessly extending his lead as he continued to clock impressive lap times. He later remarked, “I knew if I could keep my laps in the 1:48s, I could probably stay out front.” Wilkerson held strong in second place, managing to fend off Cunha’s advances as the race neared its conclusion.

When the checkered flag waved, Brad Hendry took a resounding victory, cementing his status as a front-runner in the Fay Myers Motorcycle World RoR GTO. Wilkerson and Cunha rounded out the podium, showcasing the competitive spirit that defines the MRA.

RoR GTU: Rizzo’s remarkable comeback

If the GTO race highlighted dominance, the Apex Auto Glass Race of the Rockies GTU unfolded as a gripping tale of resilience. Salvatore Rizzo (#9) struggled with a rocky start, executing a massive wheelie off the line that saw him tumble back to fourth or fifth place. “It was mildly embarrassing,” Rizzo quipped afterward, “but I knew I had the pace—I just had to get to work.” And work he did.

As Rizzo battled with Tyrel Diekmann (#724), the two engaged in a fierce duel that saw them trading positions lap after lap. Rizzo, with a keen eye for opportunity, seized the moment when Diekmann faced technical difficulties with his quick shifter. He began unleashing mid-to-low 1:53 lap times, steadily closing the gap to the leaders.

By the eighth lap, Rizzo spotted another competitor ahead—Jeremiah Walker (#562) aboard his MV Agusta F3 RR. “That lit a fire under me,” he recalled, recognizing the imminent challenge. After overtaking Walker around lap ten, Rizzo shifted into defensive mode, knowing he had to fend off a last-ditch effort from Walker on the final lap. As they approached Turn 10, Walker lunged for the win, but Rizzo held his line, clinching victory by a mere 0.300 seconds.

Amateur GTO: Evans shows exceptional control

The Amateur GTO race, sponsored by Rocky Mountain Family Dental & Implant, brought its own excitement to Round 1. John Evans (#154) rocketed off the line on his BMW 1000cc superbike, immediately taking charge of the race. Ryan Reasoner (#88) on the Yamaha R6 chased closely, determined to stay in contention.

Evans utilized the BMW’s raw power to extend his lead down the back straight, while Reasoner pushed hard through the technical sections of the track, refusing to let Evans get too far ahead. Behind them, Robert Brown (#41) maintained a steady pace, staying within striking distance without ever losing sight of the front runners.

Despite Reasoner’s best efforts to close the gap, it was Evans who demonstrated remarkable composure and strategy, crossing the finish line five seconds clear of the competition to claim a decisive victory.

More than just a race

While the premier classes captured the spotlight, every category at Round 1 embodied the essence of the MRA: a commitment to competitive excellence and a vibrant community of racers. From newcomers making their debut to seasoned veterans chasing their goals, the spirit of camaraderie and passion for motorsport thrived in every corner of the paddock and pit lane.

With the first round officially behind us, the 2025 MRA season is shaping up to be nothing short of exhilarating—filled with fresh rivalries, technical advancements, and the relentless pursuit of speed. Mark your calendars for Round 2 on June 8th at Pueblo Motorsports Park. The excitement is just beginning!
