Renault’s electric evolution: The 5 Turbo 3E
Renault is making a bold statement by reintroducing one of its most legendary models, the 5 Turbo, this time with an innovative electric twist. The highly anticipated 5 Turbo 3E was fully unveiled recently, generating excitement among car enthusiasts and tech aficionados alike. Set to commence deliveries in 2027, this hot hatch promises a unique blend of nostalgia and modern performance. While pricing details remain under wraps, Renault has hinted that reservations will begin shortly in various markets, with production limited to just 1,980 units. Given its performance specifications, it’s likely that the price will reach six figures.
A tribute to a rally icon
The 5 Turbo 3E serves as a spiritual successor to the 5 Turbo and 5 Turbo 2, which were developed for Renault’s rally car program in the 1980s. Although the 3E is not tied to any racing initiatives, it boasts impressive performance capabilities that pay homage to its predecessors. This new model shares a general design with the Renault 5 E-Tech electric hatch launched last year, but beyond that, the similarities are minimal. The proportions have been adjusted significantly, with a relocated windshield and an extended wheelbase, resulting in a width that rivals modern supercars, measuring an impressive 80 inches.
Performance features of the 5 Turbo 3E
At the heart of the 5 Turbo 3E is a custom platform tailored for a rear-wheel-drive system, featuring two in-wheel motors that deliver a formidable 533 horsepower. This power is harnessed through a sophisticated 800-volt electrical system, paired with a 70-kWh battery capable of charging at an astonishing rate of up to 350 kW. This means drivers can expect to recharge from 15% to 80% in about 15 minutes when using a suitable DC fast charger. Additionally, regenerative braking enhances efficiency by replenishing the battery while driving, with four adjustable levels to choose from.
Impressive specs and capabilities
Despite being an electric vehicle, the 5 Turbo 3E maintains a relatively lightweight curb weight of 3,395 pounds, thanks to its carbon-fiber body construction. Future owners can look forward to exhilarating acceleration, achieving 0 to 62 mph in under 3.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 168 mph. Renault emphasizes that this model is engineered for “several hot laps” on the track, and drivers can expect a driving range of approximately 250 miles according to the WLTP test cycle, although this may vary under stricter EPA testing conditions.
Interior design and technology
The interior of the 5 Turbo 3E is designed for both performance and comfort. It features bucket seats and six-point harnesses, with numerous components crafted from carbon fiber to keep the weight low. A rally-inspired vertical handbrake pays homage to the original 5 Turbo, while modern amenities include a 10.1-inch instrument cluster and a 10.3-inch infotainment system, both designed to enhance the driving experience. Additionally, Renault plans to offer fully customizable liveries, allowing owners to choose designs that reflect the heritage of the original models, including iconic color combinations like the yellow, white, and black inspired by the 1982 Tour de Corse rally car.
Performance variants and market presence
The 5 Turbo 3E is not the only performance-focused variant of the new Renault 5 E-Tech. The brand’s sister company, Alpine, has already introduced the A290 hot hatch, which is based on the 5 E-Tech platform. The A290 boasts a maximum output of 220 horsepower and is currently available in select markets. With the introduction of both the 5 Turbo 3E and the A290, Renault and Alpine are clearly positioning themselves to capture the attention of performance enthusiasts and electric vehicle aficionados alike.
