The automotive world is witnessing a remarkable resurrection as The Questionable Garage embarks on an ambitious restoration project of a rare GM EV1. This electric vehicle, VIN 212, was acquired in late 2026 from an impound auction for a substantial $104,000. The EV1’s rarity stems from its original leasing model and subsequent recall by GM, which led to most of these innovative vehicles being crushed.

The restoration journey is fraught with challenges, primarily due to the scarcity of spare parts and the significant differences between early and later models. However, the team has made notable progress, as highlighted in their latest video update.

The restoration process: overcoming initial hurdles

The team’s first task was to address the car’s electrical system. After decades of exposure, the wiring harness was covered in corrosion and grime. The team employed an ultrasonic cleaner to gently remove the buildup, utilizing vibrations to dislodge the debris. This meticulous cleaning process was crucial for ensuring the electrical components could function properly.

Once the harness was cleaned, the team mounted it on a buck outside the car for easier access during testing. This setup allowed them to successfully restore 12-volt electrical power, bringing life back to the dashboard, radio, odometer (showing 28,832 miles), and brake lights. A significant milestone was achieved when the car accepted its security code, a necessary step towards making it drivable again.

Reassembling the interior: a step towards functionality

The shifter panel underwent a thorough cleaning and reassembly process. The team installed new bulbs for the backlit buttons and removed a taped-on screw that was likely intended to block the park-interlock switch. This screw was part of the car’s decommissioning process, as the EV1 was donated to Clark Atlanta University by GM. The automaker allowed some cars to survive as teaching aids but ensured they couldn’t be driven on the road.

Seeing the instrument cluster, shifter, and Oldsmobile-sourced head unit light up is a heartening sight for automotive enthusiasts. This progress indicates that the EV1 might soon be able to turn a wheel again. However, several challenges remain, including installing EV1 software onto a new powertrain control module sourced from an S-10 EV.

The EV1’s legacy: a missed opportunity and a hopeful future

The GM EV1 is often regarded as one of the greatest false starts in automotive history. GM began recalling and decommissioning the EV1 in 2003, only to unveil the Chevrolet Volt concept four years later. One can’t help but wonder how the automotive landscape might have evolved if GM had built upon the EV1’s momentum instead of abandoning it.

Despite this setback, the restoration of EV1 212 is a beacon of hope. With GM’s backing, the project is gaining traction. The team’s dedication and the automaker’s support are crucial for the successful completion of this historic restoration.
