The electric vehicle (EV) market in Italy continues to grow, despite a slight slowdown in July 2026. With 7,183 units sold, the market saw a decrease from June but remained significantly higher than the 5,899 units sold in the same month a year ago. This growth reflects a broader trend, with EVs now accounting for 5.8% of total vehicle registrations, up from 4.8% in July 2026.
From January to July 2026, Italy registered 86,003 electric vehicles, marking a remarkable 70.4% increase compared to the same period in 2026. EVs now represent 8.1% of the total market, surpassing diesel vehicles, which have dropped to 6.8%. The cumulative number of EVs on Italian roads has reached 441,453, highlighting the accelerating shift towards electric mobility.
The Rise of BYD Dolphin Surf
The BYD Dolphin Surf made headlines in July 2026 by overtaking the previously dominant Leapmotor T03. With 572 units sold, the Dolphin Surf claimed the top spot, pushing the T03 to second place with 517 units. The BMW iX1 secured the third position, rounding out the top three. Despite this monthly setback, the Leapmotor T03 maintained its lead in annual sales, with 22,358 units sold from January to July 2026.
The Dacia Spring and Tesla Model Y followed closely, with 5,519 and 4,256 units sold respectively. Other notable models included the Citroen e-C3, BMW iX3, and Skoda Elroq, each contributing to the diverse range of EVs available in the Italian market. The competition among these models underscores the growing variety of options for consumers seeking electric vehicles.
Market Dynamics and Consumer Preferences
The Italian EV market is characterized by dynamic shifts in consumer preferences and market dynamics. The Leapmotor T03, once the undisputed leader, faced stiff competition from newer models like the BYD Dolphin Surf. This shift can be attributed to several factors, including pricing, features, and the availability of incentives. The T03’s price, which dropped to as low as 4,900 euros with incentives, initially drove its popularity. However, the Dolphin Surf’s performance and features have resonated with consumers, leading to its rise in the market.
The top 10 best-selling EVs in July 2026 included a mix of compact cars and SUVs, catering to different consumer needs. The Fiat 500, BMW iX3, and Volvo EX30 were among the models that appealed to a wide range of buyers. The BYD Sealion 7 and Skoda Elroq also made the list, reflecting the increasing diversity in the EV market. This variety ensures that there is an electric vehicle suitable for almost every type of driver.
The Italian EV market is poised for continued growth, driven by technological advancements, government incentives, and increasing consumer awareness. As more models enter the market and existing ones improve, the competition will intensify, benefiting consumers with more choices and better value. The shift from diesel to electric vehicles is a clear indication of the changing landscape, with EVs becoming an integral part of Italy’s automotive future.
