Empowering the next generation of riders
The Flying Piston Benefit is proud to support the All Kids Bike initiative, which aims to teach every child in America how to ride a bicycle. With their Kindergarten PE Learn-to-Ride Program recently implemented at RJ Longstreet Elementary School in Daytona Beach, Florida, this effort is set to create a new wave of young riders. This initiative isn’t just about teaching kids how to balance on two wheels; it’s about instilling a sense of confidence, independence, and a love for biking from an early age.
The program details
The comprehensive bike education program encompasses extensive teacher training and certification. It includes a complete curriculum featuring engaging lesson plans, fun games, and activities designed to capture the attention of kindergarten students. The program also provides a fleet of 24 Strider balance-to-pedal bikes, pedal conversion kits, and fully adjustable helmets. Additionally, instructors receive a bike equipped with a conversion kit, storage racks, and access to a resource portal that offers ongoing support throughout the program’s lifespan.
Kickoff event highlights
To celebrate the launch of this exciting program, RJ Longstreet Elementary hosted a kickoff event attended by representatives from Teddy Morse’s Harley-Davidson. Participants had the unique opportunity to assemble the bikes that will be used in the program, fostering a sense of community involvement and support for the initiative. As Marilyn Stemp, co-founder of the Flying Piston Benefit, stated, “Thanks to our presenting sponsor, Motorcycle Safety Lawyers, and industry supporters, we’re getting more kids on bikes and nurturing future motorcyclists.”
The impact on students
Each year, approximately 40 kindergarten students will benefit from this program, enabling them to learn how to ride a bike during their PE classes. With the equipment designed to last between 7 to 10 years, it’s estimated that up to 400 students will take part in this transformative experience over the next decade. The Flying Piston Benefit and All Kids Bike are committed to enriching the educational landscape, helping to cultivate valuable skills through the joy of cycling.
Building a love for biking
According to Lisa Weyer, executive director of the Strider Education Foundation, the partnership with the Flying Piston Benefit is pivotal. “Learning to ride a bike is a transformative experience that builds confidence, independence, and lifelong skills,” she explained. This initiative not only teaches children how to ride but also lays the foundation for a lifelong passion for biking, whether it’s on a bicycle or a motorcycle.
A community effort
The All Kids Bike program, launched in 2018, has already made significant strides in bike education. With support from the Strider Education Foundation, the initiative is active in over 1,500 schools across all 50 states, reaching more than 150,000 children annually. The Flying Piston Benefit, known for its charity events aimed at raising funds and awareness for motorcycle-related nonprofits, plays a crucial role in this endeavor.
