Horse Racing League to Revolutionize the Sport with Team-Based Format

The world of Thoroughbred racing is on the brink of a significant transformation with the launch of the Horse Racing League (HRL). This innovative league, set to debut in February 2027 aims to redefine the sport by introducing a team-based format that will captivate both casual and dedicated fans alike.

Led by industry veterans Greg Maffei former CEO of Liberty Media, and Danny Epstein founder of Skylark, the HRL is poised to bring a fresh perspective to horse racing. The league will kick off at Santa Anita in Los Angeles, followed by races at Miami’s Gulfstream Park and culminate at Keeneland in Lexington. This strategic approach is designed to create a season-long championship that will keep fans engaged throughout the year.

The Vision Behind the Horse Racing League

The HRL is not just another racing league; it is a bold initiative to transform horse racing into a team sport. By combining the thrill of competition with the allure of celebrity and brand-owned stables, the league aims to attract a broader audience. The goal is to convert casual spectators into year-round fans while adding a new dimension for longtime enthusiasts.

Greg Maffei, CEO of BANN Ventures and co-founder of the HRL, emphasizes the potential of the league to bring the excitement of teams, dramatic rivalries, and high-stakes betting to the forefront. He draws parallels to the success of Formula 1 which has demonstrated the power of modern storytelling and social media in engaging fans. Maffei believes that horse racing, with its rich heritage and star power, is perfectly positioned to benefit from a similar approach.

Key Features of the Horse Racing League

Upon its launch, the HRL will feature 10 teams competing in a points-driven championship across three cities. Each team will consist of eight horses, trainers, and jockeys, with points awarded based on finishing positions in each race. The league is in discussions to expand to three additional cities by 2029, further broadening its appeal.

One of the most exciting aspects of the HRL is the live draft event scheduled for November. This event will allow each team to select their horses, creating competitive parity and delivering a marquee offseason moment for fans. The league will also offer more than $10 million in purses and end-of-season prizes, ensuring high-stakes competition that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Founding Teams and Their Impact

The HRL has secured some of the most accomplished names in horse racing as founding teams. Godolphin the world’s largest racing operation, is one of the standout participants. With over 6,800 wins across 14 countries and a roster of prestigious accolades, Godolphin brings a wealth of experience and success to the league.

Other founding teams include WinStar known for winning the 2018 Triple Crown with Justify, and a trio of industry veterans: Gary BarberVinnie Viola and Chris Pucillo. Together, they have achieved numerous victories, including six Breeders Cup wins and two Kentucky Derby wins, adding to the league’s star power and credibility.

The Future of Horse Racing

The HRL is not just about competition; it is about creating a year-round spectacle that will attract new fans and grow the sport. By leveraging elevated race-day experiences, premium hospitality, and approachable wagering formats, the league aims to tap into the global fanbase of 36 million to 48 million Thoroughbred racing enthusiasts. Additionally, it seeks to engage the adjacent 200 million-attendee live events market and sports fans more broadly.

Everett Dobson, chair of The Jockey Club, expresses enthusiasm for the new concept, stating that it is a win for everyone in the industry. The HRL’s focus on attracting new fans and providing exciting experiences for longtime enthusiasts aligns with the broader goals of the horse racing community.

As the HRL prepares for its inaugural season in February 2027, the anticipation continues to build. With a strong foundation of experienced leaders, accomplished teams, and innovative strategies, the league is poised to revolutionize Thoroughbred racing and bring a new era of excitement to the sport.
