The 2027 MotoGP season is anticipated to bring slower lap times due to the introduction of smaller engines and the removal of ride height devices. However, reigning champion Marc Marquez has a different perspective, particularly regarding the Sachsenring circuit in Germany.
While most tracks may see reduced speeds next year, Marquez believes the unique characteristics of Sachsenring could lead to faster laps. This prediction comes after he recently set a new lap record at the circuit during the 2026 German Grand Prix, held from July 10-12.
Challenging Conventional Wisdom
The 2027 MotoGP bikes will feature 850cc engines down from the current 1,000cc, along with reduced aerodynamics and the elimination of ride height devices. These changes are expected to result in slower lap times at most circuits. However, Marquez thinks Sachsenring’s unique layout could buck this trend.
“Last year he [Fabio Di Giannantonio] did an amazing lap in Practice,” Marquez said, referring to his conversation with Di Giannantonio after reclaiming the lap record on Saturday. “So, I mean, it was that kind of circuit that I would like to have the record, but I believe that with the 850cc here, we will be in 1m18s.”
The Role of Tyres and Bike Performance
Pedro Acosta, who will be Marquez’s Ducati Lenovo teammate next year, agrees that tyre performance will be crucial. “I mean, maybe tyres will help,” Acosta said. “Also, it’s true that now with the 1,000cc we are not using the power that we normally use.”
Acosta noted that the current bikes are underpowered at Sachsenring, making it difficult to utilize their full potential. He expects the 2027 bikes to be lighter and more balanced, potentially allowing for similar or even faster lap times.
Luca Marini’s Insights
Luca Marini echoed Acosta’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of tyre development. “Depends on the tyre,” Marini said. “If they bring a good tyre, yes, we will be below the lap time.”
Marini pointed to the impressive performance of Moto2 bikes at Sachsenring this year, suggesting that with the right tyres, the 2027 MotoGP bikes could also achieve remarkable speeds.
The 2027 MotoGP season promises to be an intriguing one, with the potential for unexpected performances at circuits like Sachsenring. As Marquez, Acosta, and Marini have highlighted, the combination of bike modifications and tyre development could lead to surprising results, challenging the conventional wisdom about the impact of engine downsizing.
